Should you home school your child? Many parents are turning to homeschooling as an educational option for their children. There are a lot of factors that weigh into their decision. Many do it for religious reasons. But if you are considering educating at home for other than religious reasons, then you want to look at secular home school options. Should you home school your child?

Is your child slipping through the cracks at a big public school? Do you sense that your daughter is not being given special attention or getting her needs filled? Would your son prosper if he were allowed to spend more time on subjects that are particularly meaningful to him and do so at his own pace? These are some reasons people have reportedly asked: Should you homeschool your children?

Violence in the public schools and escalating promiscuous behavior are other concerns parents have noted. Many have reported children being bullied or subjected to obscene sexual advances. Still other parents just want more quality time with their children and the bonding homeschooling provides.

Before you start assigning homework to your children, you need to do your own homework.

Secular home schooling is a big responsibility no matter what your reasons. But you are really to be commended for seeking information and finding out what is involved before you make a commitment. Does the word commitment scare you? If it does, then homeschooling is probably not a good option for you. Just remember, however, with the responsibility comes a great deal of satisfaction and joy.

If spending quality time with your children is important to you, then you will treasure the time you have with them as their teacher. Be creative! Come up with fun field trips; play educational games; plan nature picnics and outings. You are about to set out on a wonderful trip of discovery. And you will be making memories you and your children will always cherish!

Should you home school your child? I hope this helps you make your decision. We all know that parenting is a full-time commitment. Don't be afraid to take it to the next level if you feel that secular homeschooling is a viable alternative for your family.

Should You Homeschool Your Child?

Although there are many agencies offering private tuition with a wide range of tutors, standards do vary because tutors often have varying qualifications. The variety of the provision on offer can be determined by a search on the Internet for private tuition. Researchers have found out that there may be over 25% of state school pupils in England who have private tuition after school to help them with their schooling. Furthermore a survey in England of 3,000 primary and secondary school children showed 27% of them to be receiving private tuition.

The subjects Mathematics and English are those for which most parents who decide to use private tuition look for support for their children. This is found generally to be the case for pupils of primary school age. Foreign language tuition and the sciences are more likely to be the the areas supported by private tuition for secondary school pupils.

There is one major stimulus to engage private tuition in the UK and that is the approach of Year 6 SAT's (Standard Assessment Tests) which is the driving force that encourages the parents of most primary school pupils to seek help. It is the wish to reach or exceed the national average standard which will help to get them to the appropriate learning level or setting group in their desired secondary school. While primary age children have the SAT tests to think about, secondary school children have different objectives such as to gain higher marks in their GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations.

To allow time for regular schooling, private tuition is for the most part held after school and sometimes on Saturday mornings with lessons usually taken once or twice a week. Most lessons last for an hour but older children may extend the lessons to an hour and a half. Those with poorer concentration and younger children may find that lessons of forty five minute are more suitable. Some tutors offer tuition during half-term breaks and during the summer holidays.

Private tuition is usually carried out individually but sometimes there may be a few children of similar ability who could join together for their tutoring. Charges will reflect the number of students having their tuition together in the same group. One-to-one tuition will be more expensive than private tuition that takes place in groups but this is compensated for by the advantages of fewer distractions and the individual attention that the child receives.

The main reason for taking private tuition is to ensure that areas of uncertainty in the child's education can be identified so that a programme of work can be devised to shore up the foundations and improve learning in the relevant areas.

Assessments will be carried out to see what level the student is currently working at and if there are any significant gaps in their learning that may be causing problems. The private tuition will then focus on these areas. The tutor's goal is to boost their student's self confidence in the subject and to ensure that progress is made.

Private tuition enables the student to enjoy the attention of the teacher for the full period of the lesson on a one-to-one basis. Concepts, strategies and methods can be highly focussed. In this way, misconceptions can be cleared up immediately. These focussed private lessons enable significant progress to be made and the children benefit from the undivided attention of the tutor.

The Benefits Of A Private Tutor For Your Child

More and more parents are turning to home schooling as an alternative to traditional education. Doubtless, this makes sense. Our homes are where we learn most of what life requires of us; and no teacher can do as much for a student as a parent does by talking, reading, and otherwise instructing a child. Home schooling extends this, and does so quite effectively: in fewer hours per day, home-schooled children frequently cover more material than students in traditional schools.

However, not all parents are prepared to take over the education of their children. They may not have the education themselves to do this; they may not have enough time; and most unfortunate, many of them simply aren't interested.

When one or more of these is the case, then we are well-served to build schools. Institutional education may not be as effective or efficient as home-schooling, but it still correlates powerfully with all desirable societal outcomes: income, lawfulness, civic participation, personal fulfillment. The bumper sticker is valid: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."

Few parents have all three requirements. And even those who do, almost always need some help. Few among us have mastery of visual and acoustic arts, mathematics, language, social studies, etc., that we can teach a child all the way through the high school requirements.

And for the handful of people who can do it all, everyone has limits: who has the mastery to educate a child through all the necessary college courses?

Is home schooling our goal? Should we build our lives so that our children are all home-schooled? As our world becomes more sophisticated, and more broadly educated, perhaps so. In the future, we might hope that all families have at least one parent with knowledge, time, and interest to home school.

So home-schooling is very attractive, and perhaps one day will be universal. But for the near future, brick-and-mortar schools are still necessary for most children.

How Effective is Home Schooling?

Making the decision to homeschool takes a lot of research and effort. You may need our best home school resource to help you out! When you're new to homechooling, you may begin to panic at the thought of everything you need to do. Don't worry though, because there are many resources to help you out. We'll help you get started right here!

Homeschooling is not exactly an easy decision for some families. Please do not get discouraged on your search to learn more about how to home school, and what you'll need to do. You may be surprised to learn that teaching your children is easier than you thought! Finding your own best home school resource, either online or off will help immensely.

We live in Ohio, so in our state - we start by sending what is called a "letter of intent" to the superintendent of our local school board. Basically this letter states that we intend to home school our boys, and we also need to include a basic outline of the curriculum we will be using for the year. Every state has it's own policies, so start by calling the superintendent of your own local board of education.

You may find that there are other requirements depending on the State you live in, or country for that matter. Since we live in the US - we have requirements by state, but I'm sure there are also requirements by country too. You may even need to name and register your home school.

Most cities will have a local homeschooling resource center, or you can find local homeschool groups. On of my personal best home school resources has been our local homeschool group. Within these groups, you can get acquainted with other parents in your area that are homeschooling too. Many of these groups will have more experienced families that you can learn from. Not only that, they will often share in teaching duties, schedule field trips, classes and other fun things!

Probably the best home school resource you will find, will be online. These online resources are kept up to date and current - even daily! After your initial exploration of the other resources we have listed here, your online resources will become a staple in your life. We hear about free things to do, like zoo trips, and spread it around online, so paying attention will get you some VERY cool free things!

You will find that homeschooling blogs are particularly helpful because other homeschooling parents will post comments, suggestions, tips, tricks, and yep - even free stuff when they hear about it. You will want to find other homeschooling families with blogs in your area, even Yahoo groups - so you can take advantage of the local free opportunities that come along. The online community will provide an excellent place for you to learn, grow, and contribute. Your children will benefit because you are taking advantage of all that is offered!

Among parents main responsibilities and concerns are getting their children the best education they can afford. This objective is becoming increasing harder for most parents, as they do not want to jeopardize the quality of education that their child receives. Accreditation - accreditation is very important because it ensures that an institution meets or exceeds an established set of educational standards. This means that courses from an accredited online distance education college are likely to be transferable to other accredited online or traditional colleges. Your current and prospective employers will look positively at degrees earned from an accredited institution making it easy to earn a promotion or get a new job.

Be aware of degree mills - there are many questionable accrediting agencies out on the internet that are outright fraud and are willing to give fake "accreditation" to any institution willing to pay a certain fee. Some of the degree mills are even owned by these same fake accrediting agencies. Make sure you do your homework and thoroughly investigate the accreditation that the college of your choice claims to have. While many online colleges are legitimately accredited, be aware that there are many that are not. Check out your prospective college to see if the accrediting body is approved by the United States Department of Education or CHEA.

To ensure that the degree program your are considering is aligned with your long-term educational goals, especially if you think you'll need to advance your degree (for example from bachelors to MBA), it'll benefit you to check if the online distance education institution you'd want to attend for your MBA accepts transfer credits from another online institution.

Just like in a traditional classroom, class size is important. You want to be in a class where your voice can be heard. So check the class size of the college you're considering.

Find out if the faculty hold any credentials and if they are qualified to teach the program you want to enroll in. If you can dig further to find out what degrees they hold and if they are experienced in teaching online students, this will save you the distress of finding out later that your instructor is a fellow un-qualified student with no education skills.

Support is very important to your success of online distance education program. Make sure you find if any and what level of support you will get from instructors, faculty and technical staff should you have problems with your classes or experience technical difficulties. Select a college that meets your standards of expectations.

One of the great things about online distance education programs is that you can begin almost anytime. Thus you shouldn't let anyone rush you into starting your program until you feel ready to put the time and effort it will require for you to succeed.

Unlike there before, when online degree options were severely limited, it is now possible for those willing to spend some time gathering information to find almost exactly the degree program that meets their needs.

The Basics EVERYONE Must Know About Accredited Distance Learning Colleges

Accredited home schooling programs provides an end to end education program for kids. However, most experienced home schoolers will prefer to pick and match what they believe to be the best combination of all.

There are several popular and respected accredited home schooling programs. The ones I will cover briefly here are Saxon, Center for Learning and Curriculum Associates.

Most are familiar with Saxon, one of the most reputable accredited home schooling programs available today. It is part of Harcourt Achieve and contains a whole variety of educational materials.

Saxon has been known to be very strong in Math education. It is well liked by many and is probably the best choice if you are looking for good Math programs for your home schooling curriculum.

The Center for Learning is just like the Saxon, both are well known and reputable home schooling programs. While Saxon excels in the Math education, the Center for Learning is good at English, Language Arts, Drama and Social Studies, including religious materials.

Finally, another favorite among the various home schooling programs is the popular Curriculum Associates. Their education materials focus on Reading, Language Arts and Math. They also have materials on test preparation, study skills and curriculum assessment.

As I mentioned before, most parents will not stick to any one of the home schooling programs. They will choose Reading from this publisher and Math from the other one. They often find what they like best through experimentation or from what their friends recommend through experience.

So, which of the accredited home schooling programs do you choose? If it were me, I would contact your State's Department of Education Home School contact person for a chat. This individual will know what home schooling programs with which students are having the most success.

Are You Choosing The Accredited Best Home Schooling Programs?

If you make it a habit to procrastinate with everything around you, you may not make an excellent candidate for a distance learning program. While a distance learning course can be done on your own time. it is vital to remember that putting off tests and assignments to the last moment can cause a backlog that may be your downfall.

Most instructors use recorded audio and visual material because it gives them enough room to speak as extensively as they want to. You can get an elaborate lecture from your distance learning instructor, thanks to recorded visual and audio materials. Recorded media however come with the disadvantage of limiting interaction between the instructor and the teacher.

Several distance learning courses still require that you come to the college at least twice in the duration of the course. Once when you're starting out, to pay up, do the registration, and matriculate. The other time is to receive your certificate when the course is over. A few institutions also insist that you write your final exams on the college grounds, but that can be understood.

Fraudulent diploma mills are all over the place, especially on the Internet. They are easy to find but difficult to track down for obvious reasons. You could easily fall into this trap if what you're looking for is cheap and affordable instead of good and reputable. Your distance learning dreams do deserve the best you can offer them.

Lectures on teacher education, science education, and rural development, as well as programs in agriculture for farmers, creative writing, or even mass communication, are all still delivered via radio in some places. This despite the fact that technology has brought about many changes that can and are being adopted by distance education.

Distance regardless, many schools will ask you to report in school for your final exams. It would not matter to them that you are on a distance learning program or in fact, it would. They are merely trying to limit cheating on the course. You might be a person of integrity, but they have no way of knowing that. Besides, there are others who are not so veracious, and they have no way of knowing.

Accreditation is incredibly important as far as distance learning programs and institutions are concerned. The New England associate of schools and colleges is an accreditation board for both on and off campus education. The north central association of schools and colleges and the middle states association of schools and colleges are equally accreditation bodies in their respective states. Make sure that a distance learning program is accredited before you commit to it.

Distance learning is not without its own challenges. As a full time mother, you will have to juggle the household chores with your distance learning program and that can be quite a feat. If you are an especially busy person, you will need to learn how to manage your time in order to succeed at distance learning.
