Homeschooling is a great option to take up for your child considering the many advantages it has to offer as compared to the standard schooling system. Not only do you make sure that your child surpasses academic standards, but it also develops innate talents and possibilities that your child shows.

However, the curriculum has to be given a great amount of thought as it is the base of any successful homeschooling system. The list of subjects and curriculum matter can easily be availed from various homeschooling conventions which take place all over the world, or you can arrange it through the internet or even checking out the local school board. Apart from the compulsory subjects, there are a lot of possibilities you might like to consider. Let us take a look at few of them.

Family Orientation

A lot depends on what background you come from as it would make for most of the curriculum. If you belong to the certain religion, like the Catholic Church, you might like your child to study religion and theology as a subject from a particular stage. If you are from an art background, you can make your child study art and various paint styles of the masters.

Nurturing Talents

Being the parent, you know your child the best and no one can know him or her better. Children develop most of their interests and abilities from a very young age and you can lay a profound impact by encouraging nurturing these interests by making it a part of their academic studies. Not only will it build an interest for studies and make them patient to other subjects, but with given time and patience the child would master various skills and talents as they age. If your child likes music, arrange for a tutor to teach him his choice of musical instrument.

Learning styles

A good curriculum includes many samples of learning styles and teaching styles which have been constructed with the understanding of child psychology. Recognize the learning abilities of your ward and build it according with your teaching methods. Most of these constructive curriculums can be purchased through various sources like mail order or online. Take up a few books or check up the local library to expand and develop the academic support.

Evaluating Goals

Set standards and goals to meet in both long term and short term standards. This would help you understand your priorities and make the moments you spend together studying count. Make sure to achieve most of them as nothing can compare to the pleasure and the sense of fulfillment when you attain these goals together with your child. And in a short period of time you would find your child at a higher level of knowledge as compared to most of his or her peers.

Overall, the way you design the homeschooling curriculum will play an imperative role in the development of your child as a knowledgeable individual and a person who is equipped with proper life skills. A little thought can make the future of your child, so it is crucial that you put in adequate time in designing a relevant curriculum.

You love your kids and you want the best possible future for them. Very high on that last is a good education. The trouble is, you panic every time you send them to a school that is filled with gang violence, promiscuous behavior, and drugs. You would love enroll your son or daughter in a private school but tuitions are through the roof! That’s why affordable homeschool options suddenly look better and better..

The economic conditions today are pressing in on more and more families. Many parents don’t make enough to cover the necessities of life, much less luxuries. Fortunately, when considering an at home education, this does not present much of a problem, because there are many affordable home school options.

Nest eggs aren’t what they used to be with plunging domestic and international markets and minimal savings rates. Affordable homeschool programs are an excellent way for parents to provide a quality education for their children and prepare them for college.

There was a time when colleges would frown on students who had received an affordable home school education, but that time has passed. Students who were taught at home consistently score high on their standardized academic tests.

Affordable homeschool courses can be tailored to the talents of each child in your family. Both parents can with sit down with each of their children and determine the best curriculum One of the beautiful things about educating at home is the flexibility it offers your child. It’s true they will share the basic subjects, think about how great to be able to give each child their freedom to excel in areas that best develop their passions and skills?

Without a doubt, one of the biggest benefits of an affordable home school program is the lack of peer pressure on your child. Peer pressure constantly blocks a child’s desire to learn and often robs them of the sheer joy experienced when acquiring knowledge. Families are also given much more flexibility. More time can be scheduled together as a family and less worry given to rigid learning schedules.

Here’s a side benefit you might not even have thought about: You will discover subjects that you hated in school are actually much easier to learn and far more interesting than you thought. I used to hate math ” I can trace it back to two separate math teachers that I think were terrible (one used to talk sarcastically to me if I didn’t understand something). Now I find I am actually good at math! Our children are getting a great education, and my husband and I have much more control over the friends they associate with and where they go. In the meantime, we have found new activities we love doing together as a family. All of this has brought us, as parents, great satisfaction and peace of mind.

Michigan Homeschooling- Educational Information For You!!

This is not intended to be legal advice it is distributed for information purposes. Check for updates at your public library and on the Michigan State Department Education page: Information on Home Schools.

Michigan’s Compulsory School Attendance Law

The Michigan homeschooling community should be aware of the following: The law states that “every parent, guardian, or other person in this state having control and charge of a child from the age of 6 to the child’s 16th birthday, shall send that child to the public schools during the entire school year” (MCL 380.1561, Section 1561[1]). Thankfully, Michigan’s Compulsory School Attendance law also contains exemptions so that all children between the ages of 6 and 16 do NOT have to attend a public school.

MCL 380.1561, Section 1561(3): “A child is not required to attend a public school in any of the following cases:

(a) The child is attending regularly and is being taught in a state approved non-public school, which teaches subjects comparable to those taught in the public schools to children of corresponding age and grade, as determined by the course of study for the public schools of the district within which the non-public school is located.

…(b), (c) and (d) are exemptions for students living extremely far from transportation to public school, and for those in attendance in confirmation or religious classes…

(e) The child has graduated from high school or has fulfilled all requirements for high school graduation.

(f) The child is being educated at the child’s home by his or her parent or legal guardian in an organized educational program in the subject areas of Reading, Spelling, Mathematics, Science, History, Civics, Literature, Writing and English Grammar.”

MCL 380.1561, Section 1561(4): “Exemption from the requirement to attend the public school may exist under either subsection (3)(a) or (3)(f), or both, for a child being educated at the child’s home by his or her parent or legal guardian.”

Home Educating Under Exemption (3)(a) as a Non-Public School

If a family chooses to home school under exemption (3)(a) as a non-public school, they will be under the authority of the MDE. The MDE has authority over all non-public schools and home educators operating under exemption (3)(a) because the Non-Public School Act of 1921 gives them that authority. All non-public schools must comply with the requirements of the Act which includes the following:

388.551 Section 1. The superintendent of public instruction is hereby given supervision of all the private, denominational and parochial schools of this state in such matters and manner as is hereinafter provided… It is the intent of this act that the sanitary conditions of such schools, the courses of study therein, and the qualifications of the teachers thereof shall be of the same standard as provided by the general school laws of the state.

388.553 Section 3. No person shall teach or give instruction in any of the regular or elementary grade studies in any private, denominational or parochial school within this state who does not hold a certificate such as would qualify him or her to teach in like grades of the public schools of the state.

388.555 Section 5. The superintendent of public instruction by himself, his assistants, or any duly authorized agent, shall have authority at any time to investigate and examine into the conditions of any school operating under this act… and it shall be the duty of such school to admit such superintendent… or authorized agent, and to submit for examination its sanitary condition, the records of enrollment of pupils, its courses of studies… and the qualifications of its teachers.

What Should a Non-Public School Home School Do if they wish to Exist?

To begin a non-public school home school you simply begin home schooling. You do NOT have to ask permission, get a license or even a permit to get started.

You do NOT have to request a Non-Public School Membership Reporting Form (form SM4325).

You must be or use a certified teacher (or claim a religious exemption to this requirement).

You must teach curriculum comparable to that taught in your local school district according to your child’s age and grade.

You must provide information regarding “enrollment of pupils, courses of studies and the qualifications of teachers” if, and only if, the Superintendent of Public Instruction or one of his/her “authorized agents” requests this information from you. You may report this information on the SM4325 form, or you may simply submit to the MDE a letter providing the information required by law.

You must submit to investigations and/or examinations by the superintendent or his agent “at any time” at your “non-public school” (your home), unless you are willing to refuse this kind of intrusion into your home and are willing to have the operation of your school suspended, and/or be taken to court over the matter. Although no school official has attempted this type of harassment, anyone choosing this exemption should know that the possibility exists for this to happen.

Home Educating Under Exemption (3)(f) as a Home Education Program

Michigan homeschooling Families choosing to home school under exemption (3)(f) are not required to do any type of reporting to any school official. If you are sent a SM4325 form, you do not have to return it or make any type of response. The MDE has stated that, “If the home school family has not registered, the Department will consider the home school family to be operating under the exemption (f) solely.” There is also no law requiring that any information be provided to the local or intermediate school district. Therefore, a home school existing under (3)(f) has no responsibility to provide any information to local school officials.

To begin a home education program you simply begin home schooling. You do NOT have to ask permission, get a license or even a permit. You do NOT have to request a Non-Public School Membership Reporting Form (form SM4325). You must provide your children instruction in the subject areas of Reading, Spelling, Mathematics, Science, History, Civics, Literature, Writing and English Grammar.”

The Michigan Department of Education’s Position on the Exemptions

The following statements have been taken from a Question & Answer document which the MDE provided to all of the Local and Intermediate School District Superintendents. It details how they have interpreted their role concerning the exemptions available to home educators.

“A home school family choosing to operate under exemption (a) solely, and complying with the requirements of the Non-Public School Act is considered a non-public school.”

“A home school family choosing to operate under both exemptions (a) and (f) must comply with the requirements of both (a) and (f).”

“A home school family choosing to operate under exemption (f) solely, is NOT a non-public school and NEED NOT comply with the requirements of the Non-Public School Act.”

“The MDE plays no role with this (the family choosing exemption (f) solely) home schooling family.”

“There are no minimum qualifications for the teachers (in an exemption (f) solely home school) except that they must be the parents or legal guardians of the children.”

“The (exemption (f) solely) home school family does not report to the MDE.”

“Question: How does a home school family operating under exemption (f) provide an organized educational program in the subject areas of reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing and English Grammar?
Answer: The state does not regulate the content of the basic courses.”

The most obvious fact is that home schooling your child has its own advantages and disadvantages. The flexibilities and control endowed onto you when you start home tuitions for your child can not be gotten in a public classroom situation. The values can not be taught in a public arena situation so as to speak. By taking the initiative to take control of your child’s education, a parent can shape the child’s values better than when they are taught at the normal traditional classrooms. Furthermore, your home made curriculum can incorporate your own religious and morals beliefs which can easily be instilled on your child.

Foe a parent to start home schooling their child, a teaching degree or college education is not a necessity. All that is required is for the parent to at least be a form four graduate. Although it is a much greater responsibility for the practicing parent, your child will receive for more education from the concerned parent than they would have gotten from a public school system. To add more to this if you find that there are some subjects you can not handle, you can employ a tutor to help you with these.

For your child to excel at a home tuition situation, there are two things you need to put emphasis on. These are;

The parent or the tutor must have a true desire to teach their children at whatever cost.

You must have the determination to succeed with your home tuitions.

Total dedication and effort.

If there is no dedication on the tutor’s side (who is most basically the parent), then you efforts will be wasted.

This is all it takes to succeed with home tuitions, the desire and total efforts on your part.

With these two things, your kid will realize a well rounded education that is no match to one who is publically educated. Furthermore, any parent can become an effective and an efficient teacher if they have a true desire to see their children realize a perfect education that surpasses a classroom environment.

There is no one who understands and wants their children to succeed than the parent. And to progress at a much better pace then you would find in a public school situation, a tutor must know and understand the kid well enough and have the desire to see them learn. This is not possible with a public school teacher, their motivation is usually the paycheck they receive at the end of the month. Others have too many children in their class to really care for a specific kid. They absolutely don’t have the time for a single student. The attention that a parent can provide is absolute. This is why children who are home schooled have more potential than their public educated peers.

The biggest problem that the parents face is being unsure of themselves in terms of their ability to teach. School teachers undergoes many years of education programs before they qualify to teach while majority of parents have no teaching training at all. But this should never be deterrent to giving home tuition to your child. You will be surprised how effective your teaching will be assimilated by your child. School teachers face many obstacle on their day to day jobs, thus giving attention to an individual child is usually a tall order. They must overcome and familiarize themselves with many children’s learning styles. Other burdens they have to overcome includes different behaviors, disciplinary problems from different children, school rules and regulation on top others things there are required to adhere to. As a home school tutor, the parent is in charge of only one kid, thus the child learning experience is enhanced greatly.

When it comes to the curriculum, the parent sets it according to what they feel will be beneficial to their children learning experience. They make sure their child learns a specific subject thoroughly before moving ahead. If possible, they can proceed faster because there are no less intelligent children to slow them down. The individual time set for a specific subject is reduced according to the kids learning abilities. In the case of a public or private school, the teacher must start lessons at a precise time and finish at a predetermined time. By getting through with lesson earlier, field trips and other learning activities can be taken care of.

Before you start home tuition for your child, take a little time and search the web for ideas and lesson plans. You are apt to find different topics from different areas of home schooling. With the help of these resources, online home tuition education groups, forums and your strong desire to help your child achieve a good education, you can be assured of success.

Home tuition is the act of schooling your children in the comfort of your home with a tailor made curricular. With the aspect of homeschooling your children at your home, there is always the assumption that home tuition is cheap, this is generally not the truth. Home tuition comes with its own cost. The education given is not limited to one subject but a whole load of subjects thus it becomes quite expensive when it comes to costs. These subjects come with their own cost and the parent is supposed to settle them just like if it were in a traditional education settings. There are various ways of cutting these costs. These are as follows:

The internet- The World Wide Web or what is generally known as the internet is a useful and valuable resource and it would be all most impossible for many parents if it were not there. You can do anything, right from researching for essay papers to curriculum at the comfort of your home and it comes very cheap and convenient for you.

The other way on cutting your home tuition expenses is through online auctions where you can buy curriculum programs and books at throw away prices. If this is not possible for you, then you can pay a visit to your local public library but do not forget to make a list of books which you can borrow to suit your specific needs.

For those parents who are associated with a home tuition group, you can to swap books between the members or members selling each other books which they no longer need but are useful for your case. These include used curriculums and teaching aids which will be very helpful to a particular parent. After you are through with these books, you can sell them or lend to other home tuition parents.

Pool in financial resources and negotiate with publishers for a lower price for the needed books among your support group. If you don’t have a home tuition support group in your area, simply go online for homeschooling communities and forums where you will get support and guidance regarding all home tuition resources.

Another great area where you can get helpful resources includes your local newspapers where you can look for garage and yard sales which have books and craft supplies. Go there and purchase the books that suit your home tuition situation. You can use the craft supplies for a particular craft or a scientific assignment or project.

The most important and expensive part of your home tuition is the curriculum, so before you purchase one, have some consideration into the following points:

ü It should fit into your religious beliefs and your particular family’s moral standards.

ü Your teachings and child’s learning styles should be incorporated into the curriculum.

ü The curriculum should be designed in such a way that it can be used by multiple and upcoming children at whatever stage of life.

ü The curriculum should be fully updated to suit the current educational needs of the children.

If you think that the curriculum on sale is not what you need for your child, feel free to check the internet and get the one you feel is more suitable for your family needs.

If your child’s home school becomes too repetitive, pay a visit to the zoo, science center or any other field trip to break the cycle. Consider these trips as a form of making the child’s concentration on education more comprehensive and all-round.

The decision for home schooling was based on a number of factors: desire to teach religion as part of the curriculum, undesireable school conditions, and overall dissatisfaction with the school’s curriculum.

Although it’s difficult for researchers to gather data on home schools, some research indicates that adults who were home schooled have a higher college attendance rate and seem more satisfied with life in general.

Home schooled children have consistently scored exceptionally higher than average on achievement tests. I recently read that home schooled 3rd graders scored higher than 81% of public school students in math alone!

www.SuccessfulHomeSchool.info

The biggest benefit to home schooling is simply that parents love their kids and want them to have a bright future. Teachers care very much about their students but no one loves their kid like a mom or dad.

Often the home school parents are able to spend significantly more money on educational materials than a public school can. The average cost of supplies per student per year can range from $200-$2000 at a home school.

Home school students can progress through educational material at the student’s rate. This makes it much easier for home school students to be enrolled one or more grades above their public and private school-age peers.

Home schooled children are healthier than public school kids since they aren’t exposed to so many sick children.

Home schooled children don’t deal with so much peer pressure.

Home schooled children often develop exceptional relationships with their siblings.

Parents can offer their children instruction in areas that aren’t fostered in public schools. The curriculum is flexible and can be ever changing.

The schedule can be changed if a child needs more or less help in a particular subject.

One mom told me that she is able to take her children to the museum for art class, the symphony for music, and ice skating for physical ed. She wants her children to socialize with other children their age so she often incorporates other home schools into her field trips.

If you’re considering home schooling your child, where do you begin?

There are great resources available for parents who are already home schooling and for those who are just kicking the idea around. Starting a home school can be overwhelming. The parents I interviewed said that it is well worth the sacrifice.

I was referrred to this resource and I agree that it’s great:

Homeschooling Tips: For Single Parents

Some single parents tend to experience a number of challenges, considering that they have to bring in the cash flow to the house and have a child to take care of at the same time. There is often hardly anyone to talk to and look for support, not to mention that the social life is figuratively down the bogs. And when most single parents choose to home school their wards, the odds faced are quite considerable. However, homeschooling does seem to be a feasible choice as most private schools are unaffordable due to its high expense.

Nevertheless there are many parents who have managed to cope with and keep up with academic standards and beyond by homeschooling their wards. Not only do they harbor and support good learning but they also give their wards a zest for knowledge and teach good family values along with the many subjects. Many homeschooled children have over the years proved that they have higher level of knowledge when compared to their peers and have often done well on the standardized tests.

In case you are single parent and are considering homeschooling your ward, then the suggestions mentioned below may come in handy

Effective Time Management:

Time management is the key to the success of a homeschooling initiative. If you are a single parent, with good time management and organization, you would be able to devote the much needed attention that your child needs to learn and keep up with the tutelage. You would find that where you initially thought that time would be against you, there is a good chance that you might be surprised. See, in the school system model of 6-8 hours, there are breaks between the classes, gym time, lunch recess and other lengths of time where the child is idle. A good effort to make each moment count is the best method of a successful home schooling schedule. But make sure not to bog down the child with too much responsibility.

School Nights

There is a good chance that you can keep up with your work while catching up to the needs of your ward through homeschooling. Public schools have to follow government holidays, weekends and seasonal vacations which do not apply to homeschooling. You can make most of these days and more. However, it is best not to persist and make sure that the child gets enough time to play and relax. Mix foreign languages, art and music(if you know how to play an instrument or two) during study hours to help your child relaxed or you can even encourage a reading hour where you and your ward can take up a good book and enjoy together. Classics like a Tale of two cities, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn make for a good read which is enjoyable for both parents and child

Subject and Curriculum:

Most of the subjects can be negotiated by you alone. However, you might need a tutor for specialized subjects which are needed in the stages of higher learning. This might cost a bit, but do understand that it is a lot less as compared to the schooling system costs.

Homeschooling, for some parents might seem to be a costly affair. But reality is not! You need not have to worry about the cost involved. Families often make buying decisions that don’t work for them may be because they buy something that was really not needed to be bought. Shopping for homeschool curriculum can be a nightmare for such parents.
It is thus needed to look in for used curriculum and discount homeschool supplies which can help parents to control their homeschooling budget.

Some useful tips:

• Before buying textbooks, make sure what curriculum you want to teach your each child. Consider every subject that you will teach.

• Also, make a list of items you need for each subject and child. These items may include lesson plans, workbooks, answer keys, flash cards and extra items.

• It is always better to note down the name of publisher, title, edition and level of each item that you want to purchase.

• There are many places to find used homeschooling materials online. Some homeschool curriculum providers have message boards where you can list or buy used homeschool books. You can check in websites and online message boards. There are many online auction sites that provide lists of used textbooks.

• Check out with local homeschool groups for used textbooks. You can place your list in the newsletter or email group. Look in for listings of items that are on sale or for free. It might have not worked for their homes, but might work for you. So just have a look before someone else peeps in!

• You can also have a look at local garage sales, thrift stores, library sales and used bookstores. Many of them are at half price that can suit your budget as well as your requirement of that particular curriculum.

• Be aware of the condition of the used homeschool curriculum items you’re buying. If the workbooks are worked through, you might need a replacement of the same. It is better to ask the seller about any missing or damaged pages in the books or pages that contain writing. If only a few pages have been worked through, you can erase the writing easily.

• There are places or districts that sell surplus and cheap textbooks annually. Check in for such books. Keep in mind the outdated books that have no purpose of useful teaching. Screen carefully through the pages of the books.

• Evaluate the sellers payment methods before shelling out money for the purchase of textbooks. Try to understand the total cost of the products and how they can be reached to you. Ask for the time of arrival of books and the sellers return policy.

• Your feedback is essential to help other buyers decide whether to make the purchase or not. Thus, your feedback about the seller is essential for other buyers to make their decision.

While children learn plenty of information throughout the school year, some of that can be lost during the summer. In addition to that issue, often called “summer brain drain,” there are a variety of other reasons for parents to consider an online summer learning program. In fact, there are many advantages of learning through the summer months.

Prevent Loss of Learning

Facts oftentimes are not being practiced enough during summer vacation. Learning through the summer months can help avoid a loss of learning that occurs due to non-practice. Oftentimes teachers spend a good portion of the beginning of the school year reviewing what was learned in the previous year. Summer learning programs can make this process and transition much smoother for a child.

Catch Up on Missed Skills

Sometimes a child can get behind and even miss some of the important basic skills. This is especially true in mathematics. Because previous math skills are required to learn and process upcoming math, it’s important that a child fully comprehend each math process. Knowing and understanding all required concepts will help a child succeed in future lessons. A summer math program can help a child catch up on these essential skills.

Review Learned Skills

If a child has already mastered the required skills for his or her grade level, summer learning programs can prepare that child for the next grade level. Learning about some of the things to come can give a child a head start and smooth the transition to the next grade level. Math can be especially difficult for some children to grasp. For more convenience and flexibility, try an online summer math program.

Master Learned Skills

Even if a child has learned the basic required skills in the appropriate level during the school year, summer learning can still be beneficial. Further practice of those skills can help ensure or achieve mastery. Mastering basic and advanced summer math skills can help a child to achieve in upcoming study during the school year. To advance further in math, mastery of each skill is required. That is because as math progresses, those skills will be used to solve more complex math problems. Practicing learned facts through the summer months can help a child master those required skills.

Get a Head Start on the Upcoming School Year

Even a child who has already mastered his or her required skills can still benefit from a summer learning program. A child can get a head start on lessons to come in the upcoming school year by learning some of them through summer education. This can either help the child to advance further in studies or provide a smooth transition when advancing to the next grade level. Online summer learning programs are a great way to do this. Some are even designed around this purpose.

The fledgling program, Wolfram Alpha, revealed at Harvard University in the US last week, takes the first step towards that many believe to be the Holy Grail of the Internet – a massive accumulation of data that understands and responds to regular language in the same manner a human does.

Even though the system is still new, it has already produced massive interest and excitement among technology pundits and internet aficionados.

Computer experts believe that the new search engine could be an extraordinary leap in the evolution of the internet. Nova Spivack, an internet and computer expert, advised that Wolfram Alpha could prove equally as popular as Google. “It is really impressive and significant,” he wrote. “In fact it may be as important for the web (and the world) as Google, but for a different purpose.”

Tom Simpson, of the blog www.convergenceofeverything.com, said: “What are the wider implications exactly? A new paradigm for using computers and the web? Probably. Emerging artificial intelligence and a step towards a self-organizing internet? Possibly… I think this could be big.”

Wolfram Alpha will not only give a direct answer to queries like “how high is Mount Everest?”, but it will additionally create a organized page of related information – all properly annotated – such as geographical location and nearby towns, and other mountains, complete with charts and graphs.

The real innovation, however, is in its ability to sort things out “on the fly”, according to its British inventor, Dr Stephen Wolfram. If you ask it to compare the height of Mount Everest to the length of the Golden Gate Bridge, it will tell you. Or ask what the weather was like in London on the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated, it will cross-check and provide the answer. Ask it about D sharp major, it will play the scale. Type in “10 flips for four heads” and it will determine that you want to get the probability of coin-tossing. If you want to know when the next solar eclipse over Chicago is, or the precise current location of the International Space Station, it can work it out.

Dr. Wolfram, an award-winning physicist who is equations.

“I’ve wanted to make the knowledge we’ve accumulated in our civilization computable,” he said last week. “I was not sure it was possible. I’m a little surprised it worked out so well.”

Dr. Wolfram, 49, who was educated at Eton and had completed his PhD in particle physics by the age of 20, added that the launch of Wolfram Alpha later this month would be only the beginning of the project.

“It will understand what you are talking about,” he said. “We are just at the beginning. I think we’ve got a reasonable start on 90 per cent of the shelves in a typical reference library.”

The engine, which will be free to use, computes by drawing on the knowledge of the internet, as well as non-public databases. Dr. Wolfram said he predicted that about 1,000 people would be needed to maintain its databases updated with the most recent discoveries and information.

Wolfram Alpha has been designed with experts and intellectuals in mind, so its grasp of popular culture is, at the moment, comparatively weak. The term “50 Cent” resulted in “absolute horror” in tests, for example, because it confused a discussion on currency with the American rap artist. For this reason alone it is unlikely to provide an immediate threat to Google, which is working on a similar type of search engine, a version of which it launched last week.

“We have a lot amount of popular culture facts,” Dr Wolfram said. “In some cases popular culture information is much more shallowly computable, so we can figure out who’s related to who and how tall people are. I certainly expect we will have lots of popular culture information. These are linguistic horrors because if you place in books and music a much of the names clash with other concepts.”

He added that to assist with that Wolfram Alpha would be utilizing Wikipedia’s popularity index to decide what users were likely to be interested in.

With Google now one of the world’s top brands, worth $100bn, Wolfram Alpha has the potential to become one of the biggest names on the planet.

Dr. Wolfram, however, did not rule out working with Google in the future, as well as Wikipedia. “We’re working to partner with all possible organisations that make sense,” he said. “Search, narrative, news are complementary to what we have. Hopefully there will be some great synergies.”

Just pretend that eventually all information, like historical facts, and important data will be stored in computers! If this begins a revolutionary shift in learning, educators need to become leaders now! Teachers must be the pioneers of the cutting edge technology on the web 2.0 platform! Start now.

If you are thinking about or planning on homeschooling, you may be wondering whether you need a homeschool Kindergarten curriculum to homeschool successfully. Truth be told, all it takes to home school a Kindergarten child is what you have used and done up until now along with a few more resources. If you have a good homeschool guide, you can use that along with the following principles and be on your way to a great homeschool year: 1. Read to your child – This is so simple, many parents overlook the value of it. They think they have to use a bunch of prepackaged material, when great picture books will work extremely well. Buy your own books or use the library, but make sure you read to your child at least 30 minutes per day. This will expand their knowledge along with develop their language skills. 2. Play with numbers – There are many ways to teach homeschool Math. Workbooks are just one way to introduce Math. You can also use flashcards, games, money, a ruler, a calendar and many other hands-on resources to help your child learn what he needs to know about numbers. 3. Paper and pencils – Make sure you have lots of paper, pencils and interesting writing utensils readily available for your child to use. Write notes, make lists, draw pictures, and trace anything you want. 4. Don’t stress over learning to read – Your child will pass through four different stages in his quest of learning to read. He might spend a little longer in one phase than another. Just keep working little by little and enjoy your time together. As long as he learns a little each day, he will progress and eventually learn how to read. 5. Science and History are fueled by stories – History is a collection of stories about what happened in the past and Science is a collection of stories about how the world works. Keep reading interesting books with your children and you won’t have to worry about a curriculum because he will be learning even more than a curriculum will teach him. Want to know more about homeschool Kindergarten curriculum?

Homeschooling and public schooling co-exist successfully today! But one question that often comes in to the mind of parents when the time has come for educating their child is what to choose between homeschooling and public schooling? For parents who are doubtful in choosing the type of education for their children, it is better to know the pros and cons of both systems first.

The advantages of homeschooling over public schooling:

• Homeschooling provides individual attention and quality time to each learning student which is not possible in a public school. A parent can observe how their kids progress and can help them in areas they find difficult to cope.

• Homeschooling is more flexible than public schooling as the schedule can be adjusted to the child’s suitability. Flexibility also helps in changing the curriculum according to what is easy for you and your child. Parents can help children understand the subject matter and yield good results.

• Children are made to learn in a practical environment thereby involving them in a variety of situations. Children tend to learn faster and enjoy working in such situations.

• Another big advantage of homeschooling over public schooling is the cost structure. Homeschooling is comparatively less expensive as compared to public and private school fees. You can involve your child in social activities that can help them to develop their social skills and hence save a lot of money too.

• There is no age classification for homeschooling children; hence children not only get engaged with same age group but also with children of different ages and adults as well.

Such factors have induced many parents to opt for homeschooling but one should not forget the positive aspect of public schooling which a child lacks in home based schooling. The advantages of public schooling over homeschooling are:

• Public schooling provides social development of the child. Although a homeschooling child can be involved in social activities, none will be as effective as being a part of some social groups for years to come. The classroom setting provides the benefit of socializing for your child.

• The parent is left with the complete responsibility to educate the child during homeschooling. Thus, you might not get time for yourself and your job which is otherwise possible in public schooling. This also helps in reducing financial stress for parents who are both working.

• Public schooling has trained teachers who are well equipped with the knowledge of teaching a wide range of subjects. Homeschooling, on the other hand leaves no option but for the parent to understand each and every subject before making it easy for their child to learn. Moreover, the parents have to research and gather the curriculum for each of their child.

Choosing to school your child at home is a great idea for both you as well as your child, however you have to understand that it is no small thing. It is a great responsibility, as you have placed their education as well as their future in your hands. You won’t just be the teacher, you’ll have to keep track of every single thing that happens, and that includes the amount of time spent in the classroom. You’ll also need to keep track of attendance, things they’ve done, and many more things. This is a lot of work however, so wouldn’t it be just great if there was something to do it all for you? Guess what? There is! There are many different homeschool software packages available and they will keep track of everything, in addition to a schedule tailored to your needs. But there are so many out there, which do you choose?

As technology has improved, so has homeschool software. If you can think of something that you need, there is undoubtedly a piece of software to help. What are some features that you should look for in homeschool software? The first thing that you’ll need to do is keep track of attendance and the hours that you’re in the classroom. This might seem like it’s not necessary considering you will know where your kids are at all times, but it really is important. It’s also a great tool for you to know how much time you’ve spent on something. Most homeschool software programs will allow you to create a schedule as well. This is invaluable for helping you balance your time between teacher and parent. Without some sort of schedule to stick to, you’ll be all over the map.

Another important feature to have is some way to set goals for your student and track progress. One of the most important things that you can do for your child is teach them how to reach goals and it’s obvious that you can’t reach a goal if you don’t have one. Once you set the goal for them, they need to be able to track their progress. A good homeschool software program will do this for them.

Make sure that you also watch your own plans very carefully. While you are making lesson plans you’ll be able to save them and pull them up some other time. Additionally, most curriculum for homeschooling that you are using will have the option of being integrated with the software package that you choose. You’ll be able to share your curriculum with other home school teachers as well, and that will help others who are just starting out. Your child may also be presented with the option of doing assignments on the computer, allowing the software to track their progress and let you know how they are doing, as well as what areas they need to work on the most.

Having done these things, you may even track their grades using this software. This method is perfect for monitoring their progress in the different areas, and you’ll even have the option of printing out report cards for them.

Basically you need to ensure that the program you buy has those functions at the very least. Many of the programs on the market have these as basic functions in addition to many more. Above all, make sure that the package you buy meets the needs of both you and your child.

Once upon a time, homeschooling used to be an extreme statement – something like a declaration of independence.

It was the (right-wing|conservative Christians who advocated homeschooling in the 1980’s and legalized it in every State. But the average homeschooler of today is not religiously motivated.

Later surveys indicate that parents are quite fed up with the public school system where much of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the negative environment in school, ranging from drugs and abuse to negative peer pressure.

As a result, we have a surprising mixture of people who make up the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their main aim is providing meaningful and productive education through a method that strengthens the bond between the various members of the family.

All these families have one main thing in common – a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children in these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and, I think, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their kids in a more natural and nurturing environment.

Public schools can make a child nervous, diffident and downright mean. Children who get their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they reach an age where they can deal with them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the quasi religious task of teaching. Everyone is put to work. Both the parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an learning experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’s education.

Parents also have a greater say over the type of religious and moral values that the child is taught. Even watching a film together can become an educational experience. Trips to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational as well as recreational.

A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often outgoings have to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is necessary. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody gets involved in the process of not spending money.

Just having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband chips in and there just is no room for boredom.

Yes OK, problems still do sometimes crop up, and there will be many misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your kids can always rely on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a very rewarding experience.

We’ll increase the steps to take to ensure renaissance learning here in part II of II. In the first segment of this installment we looked into peer to peer and global socialization needs of the home schooled child and some ways we might ensure we get this socialization. Then we looked at the concept of learning from different environments, getting out of the house and exposing the home school student to experiential learning in the world we live.

A parent/educator must know they are not the end all for their child’s education. It’s okay to recognize one’s limits, in fact it’s healthy and offers a great learning opportunity to a child: seeing a parent know their limitation and how they respond to it. For example, much is to be learned from team sports, not all are equipped to be a football coach, etc. In this case, the parent looks outside his/her self and enrolls the child into a sport league. Perhaps it’s camping or tying knots or painting or building or working on cars, etc., there are many opportunities to expose a child to the world at hand, to provide learning opportunities by recognizing ones own limits and responding positively to the limits.

Even still, the parent/educator may be able to teach the fundamentals or the concept of a subject but may choose to enroll the child in a class, club or camp simply to change up the learning environment, the voice of authority. This has been alluded to a couple of times in the article. This is not an indictment of the parent/educator it’s simple human nature: the child is going to tune you out. Heck, most parents who aren’t teaching their children find the children will tune them out. Add to the normal job of parent, teacher, and your opportunity to be tuned out increases exponentially. So, be aware, look for safe opportunities to switch it up.

Once limitations are owned new doors can be opened to provide the home school child an unlimited education of life and learning.

Often home school kids aren’t physical enough. In school there is physical education, recess and or team sports. All of these offer physicality an important element in learning. Studies have shown tying physicality to a lesson or during a lesson increases memory retention. Too, there is the physical awareness of ones own body: balance, coordination, spacial awareness, muscle tone, etc. This isn’t to say all kids should be athletes but being physical, being in motion is positive for health and vitality, learning and recollection.

The home school parent can find many venues to offset the lack of a PE class: park and recreation departments, community service districts, public pools, gyms and independent sports clubs are all excellent avenues for physicality and interaction. There are also more solo type activities or programs you can look toward: cycling, rope climbing, hiking, walking, jumping rope etc. Earlier it was noted the adventure camp offers more than just socialization, this is another element a camp can touch on, physical challenges and endeavors. Opportunities for physical/body education are many.

Spinning off of physicality is the need for self-awareness and self-discovery. There is a powerful self-empowering aspect to challenging oneself and achieving a goal. This empowerment can come from engaging a new situation and leaving the situation feeling good about one’s self, how they handled the situation. Even more comes from taking on a challenge that has an initial response of, ‘no way, I couldn’t do that’, and then doing it. Students, and adults for this matter, feel better about themselves when they accomplish something. This is why people swim the English Channel, run marathons, enter spelling bees etc. These experiences make us better people, make us stronger and give us a stronger sense of self and conviction to stand by our beliefs.

An interesting thing happens when a child is thrust into an entirely new environment stripped of old safety nets and patterns of behavior. In the adventure camp setting, with new friends (other campers) and new teachers (counselor/guides) encouraging and dictating what is to be done, a child will go farther, extending themselves beyond what they previously thought they could. They won’t turn for help or ask to quit the task nearly as quickly as they would if a parent was near. There are established patterns of nurturing and needing between parent and child and if the parent is there, the moment the “I can’t do this” flag comes into the child’s mind, they’ll turn and ask for help. The parent, conditioned to rescue and protect instinctively reaches out. In the new environment this doesn’t occur. Everyone involved is encouraging the completion of the task. Of course, it is completed and the personal awareness, confidence and new self-definition of who one is is amazingly powerful.

For concentrated and skilled doses of: socialization, peer-socialization, experiential education, new voices of teaching, physicality and self-discovery look to an adventure camp. An outdoor setting is suggested simply because learning increases out of doors and these camps are most likely going to have a focus on physical/engaged learning with ropes or hikes, whitewater rafting, camping etc. This type of summer camp provides a whole host of learning experiences. The learning grows exponentially if one chooses a residential style camp wherein the kids stay the night. The concentrated experiences lend themselves to tremendous growth and prove extremely healthy to the home schooler who not only finds new confidence but friends to keep in touch throughout the year.

The choice to homeschool should not be made lightly. Homeschooling is legal in every state, but you need to research and discuss in order to make a wise decision. Here are a few questions to ask yourself if you want to know if homeschooling is right for your family, and to see if it is a option for your family.

The first question you should ask yourself is, Am I comfortable spending all of my time with my children? One of the main reasons that people homeschool they’re children is that they want the best for them, and love their children. If you like spending time with your children, homeschooling might be a good match for you. Otherwise, if your children easily frustrate you, then homeschooling might not be a good match for you.

Will questions bother me? Homeschoolers are usually asked a lot of questions. Those questions could be about what curriculum they’re using or about socialization for their children. If you homeschool, it helps if you don’t mind answering the same questions more than once.

How can I find out about homeschooling? Check out books from your public library. There is more than likely a large selection of books that will tell you everything you need to know. The librarian might even be able to tell you if there are any homeschoolers in the area, since most homeschoolers rely heavily upon the library for source materials.

Doing an online research for “homeschool groups (your city)” or “homeschool groups (your state),” finding local homeschoolers, or reading some books will help in the process of finding an available support system. On many occasions there are opportunities for families to get together and have some fun, and homeschooling co-ops are available in many places.

If you have other questions, and you have found families that already homeschool, you may consider asking them about the pros and cons of homeschooling. Most families will be more than happy to help you make a decision, as well as being honest about their reasons. You can ask them about the hardships they had to deal with when starting out, about the curriculum, socialization, and ask if they have any suggestions about what tp use or not to use.

When choosing a curriculum, you need to know that curriculum choices are astronomical – in the price, and often in the variety available. While it is possible to homeschool without using a set curriculum, it is also possible to have “school at home” by choosing books very similar to those offered in public schools. The library books you check out earlier should have given you an idea of what your child should learn in each grade, and should have explained about the different methods.

One of the main attractions of a distance learning education is the ability to continuing working, and earning a paycheck, while going to school. With the best of both worlds, students do not have to attend classes on campus. In addition, they have the flexibility to study at a personal pace and during the time best suited to their schedule. No wonder obtaining an online degree is enticing more people to further their education.

However, a distance learning education is not without certain challenges. Traditional students are spurred on by the interaction with others and attending the lectures. Without a lot of discipline and intrinsic motivation, distance learners can easily get sidetracked by life and fail to keep up with the coursework needed to pass the class. Enjoy the benefits, but do not forget the responsibilities.

Therefore, how can distance learning students then overcome this challenge? One habit that a student must adopt is good time management. Everyone has 24 hours and it is up to us to utilize our time in the best way possible. Set up a daily or weekly plan for yourself and ensure that you set aside time for your studies daily. If you have a family, let them know about your schedule so that they know when you should not be disturbed. Divide your time appropriately between your work, your family and your studies. Of course, discipline is important here as any schedule will not do any good if it is not followed.

Getting yourself motivated is also essential towards distance learning education success. One of the ways to do this is to stay in contact with your classmates. With the internet today, it is often easy to stay in touch through email, instant messenger as well as internet phone. Discussing projects or assignments with your teammates will help you stay on track and keeps you and your teammates accountable for one another.

Setting goals and rewarding yourself when you attain them are great self-motivating habits. Start by drawing a chart on the milestones that you need to reach in order to complete your course. Strike out each goal as you complete them and reward yourself accordingly. There is a certain satisfaction whenever we see ourselves progressing and this becomes a motivating force for us to face the next hurdle.

Additionally, it is ever essential for a distance learning student to set up a quiet place for study away from home life distractions, such as the television, phone calls or other family members. Organize an off-limits study area or lock yourself in a quiet room to ensure optimum focus. Apart from that, a good chair, a strong table and adequate space are also essential elements in creating a conducive environment.

In short, successful completion of a distance learning education is totally dependent on good study habits and the determination of the individual to reach the pre-determined goal. Like any degree program, it takes old fashioned hard work, discipline, and the intrinsic motivation to succeed.

Do you want to home school your children, but have staunch feelings that you are not qualified to be a teacher? Maybe your son or daughter is floundering in a large public school and, after investigating the subject, you feel strongly that a home school program would benefit them. The alternative might be an accredited home school program.

Through a course of studies downloaded on the computer or received in the mail, your child would be studying similar subjects he or she would have been assigned in a public school. An accredited homeschool program is generally a series of self study lessons with parental supervision and involvement.

One of my daughter’s best friends suffered a long illness last year. She had to stay at home and in bed for over 5 months. During this time she was in a home study program. But her studies were assigned by the school and supervised by her teachers. My daughter’s accredited home school program is different because even though she has interaction with some teachers, I have the supervision, not a school.

There are accredited homeschool programs for children of all ages. There are preschool programs all the way through high school. The cost of these schools are generally not expensive, so they can be used by folks rich and poor. And while children are receiving a structured education, they are doing it in comfortable surroundings with their mothers and fathers.

You might decide to use an accredited home school program for your children instead of sending them to public schools for a variety of reasons. Home schooling will help you and your children form strong bonds. In addition, you will have direct control over your children’s learning because you don’t have to follow the traditional school curriculum.

Is your public school some distance from your home? If so, using an accredited homeschool program can actually save you money on transportation (not to mention school lunches and clothing). Another thing you will love is the schedule. My daughter normally studies four to five hours a day, and we try to keep that consistently between 10 in the morning and 2 to 3 in the afternoon. But that isn’t written in stone. If something comes up, if a need arises, that schedule can be adjusted to anytime during the day and any day of the week!

The number of families that choose accredited home school programs is growing each year. Perhaps it’s because they want to protect their children from such things as drugs and gang violence. Or maybe, like me, they don’t want to see their child lost in a crowded classroom. Whatever the case, I think it’s a wonderful alternative and my daughter is prospering.

Should you home school your child? Many parents are turning to homeschooling as an educational option for their children. There are a lot of factors that weigh into their decision. Many do it for religious reasons. But if you are considering educating at home for other than religious reasons, then you want to look at secular home school options. Should you home school your child?

Is your child slipping through the cracks at a big public school? Do you sense that your daughter is not being given special attention or getting her needs filled? Would your son prosper if he were allowed to spend more time on subjects that are particularly meaningful to him and do so at his own pace? These are some reasons people have reportedly asked: Should you homeschool your children?

Violence in the public schools and escalating promiscuous behavior are other concerns parents have noted. Many have reported children being bullied or subjected to obscene sexual advances. Still other parents just want more quality time with their children and the bonding homeschooling provides.

Before you start assigning homework to your children, you need to do your own homework.

Secular home schooling is a big responsibility no matter what your reasons. But you are really to be commended for seeking information and finding out what is involved before you make a commitment. Does the word commitment scare you? If it does, then homeschooling is probably not a good option for you. Just remember, however, with the responsibility comes a great deal of satisfaction and joy.

If spending quality time with your children is important to you, then you will treasure the time you have with them as their teacher. Be creative! Come up with fun field trips; play educational games; plan nature picnics and outings. You are about to set out on a wonderful trip of discovery. And you will be making memories you and your children will always cherish!

Should you home school your child? I hope this helps you make your decision. We all know that parenting is a full-time commitment. Don’t be afraid to take it to the next level if you feel that secular homeschooling is a viable alternative for your family.

Although there are many agencies offering private tuition with a wide range of tutors, standards do vary because tutors often have varying qualifications. The variety of the provision on offer can be determined by a search on the Internet for private tuition. Researchers have found out that there may be over 25% of state school pupils in England who have private tuition after school to help them with their schooling. Furthermore a survey in England of 3,000 primary and secondary school children showed 27% of them to be receiving private tuition.

The subjects Mathematics and English are those for which most parents who decide to use private tuition look for support for their children. This is found generally to be the case for pupils of primary school age. Foreign language tuition and the sciences are more likely to be the the areas supported by private tuition for secondary school pupils.

There is one major stimulus to engage private tuition in the UK and that is the approach of Year 6 SAT’s (Standard Assessment Tests) which is the driving force that encourages the parents of most primary school pupils to seek help. It is the wish to reach or exceed the national average standard which will help to get them to the appropriate learning level or setting group in their desired secondary school. While primary age children have the SAT tests to think about, secondary school children have different objectives such as to gain higher marks in their GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations.

To allow time for regular schooling, private tuition is for the most part held after school and sometimes on Saturday mornings with lessons usually taken once or twice a week. Most lessons last for an hour but older children may extend the lessons to an hour and a half. Those with poorer concentration and younger children may find that lessons of forty five minute are more suitable. Some tutors offer tuition during half-term breaks and during the summer holidays.

Private tuition is usually carried out individually but sometimes there may be a few children of similar ability who could join together for their tutoring. Charges will reflect the number of students having their tuition together in the same group. One-to-one tuition will be more expensive than private tuition that takes place in groups but this is compensated for by the advantages of fewer distractions and the individual attention that the child receives.

The main reason for taking private tuition is to ensure that areas of uncertainty in the child’s education can be identified so that a programme of work can be devised to shore up the foundations and improve learning in the relevant areas.

Assessments will be carried out to see what level the student is currently working at and if there are any significant gaps in their learning that may be causing problems. The private tuition will then focus on these areas. The tutor’s goal is to boost their student’s self confidence in the subject and to ensure that progress is made.

Private tuition enables the student to enjoy the attention of the teacher for the full period of the lesson on a one-to-one basis. Concepts, strategies and methods can be highly focussed. In this way, misconceptions can be cleared up immediately. These focussed private lessons enable significant progress to be made and the children benefit from the undivided attention of the tutor.

ns of children in the United States are homeschooled. In fact, Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) projects that this number will reach over 12 million by 2015. The United States Constitution does not have specific laws concerning education; each state governs education and has its own laws concerning homeschooling. So, if you’ve considered homeschooling your children, you will only have to learn the laws for your individual state.

Laws on homeschooling vary from state to state. Each state has a mandate to provide an education for its students; many states delegate that authority to the state’s Board of Education. It is ensured by the state Board of Education that every child receives an adequate education. The Equal Education Opportunities Act of 1974, a Federal law, was passed because of this mandate. By law, no state can deny any child an education based on their race, color, sex, or national origin. In other words, within every state, every child is guaranteed an education.

It is ultimately up to the parent to choose where their child will attend school – whether it be a public school, private school, or homeschool, since states cannot deny a child an education. Public schools are regulated by the state, as well as some private schools. However, there are often few regulations for homeschools, since a large percentage of homeschool families do so for religious reasons.

The requirement for children to attend school in some fashion during set compulsory ages is one state law that appears to be universal. However, these ages, may be different in each state. It just depends on the state’s laws; some states require children to be in school from 5 to 17, others 7 to 16. You can search the internet, or contact HSLDA to determine what your state’s compulsory ages are.

National Home Education Network, Home School Legal Defense Association, and other websites on the Internet, list the homeschool laws for each state. It would be advantageous to learn your state’s laws if you choose to homeschool. You can go back to these sites to find the laws for the new state if you move to another state, especially if you are a military family who has begun to homeschool.

Military families often move several times throughout the length of a soldier’s career. Many are choosing to homeschool because it is one way to guarantee continuity in their children’s education. Rather than transferring a child from one school to another, often internationally, a military family that homeschools can continue their child’s education without fear of negative impact.

Choosing to homeschool is not always an easy decision to make. However, it is legal in each of the fifty states. You may have to register your intent to homeschool with your local board of education or you may have to turn in portfolios. Whatever your state requires, just remember that you are allowed by law to homeschool your child, and that there are places to turn if you have questions.

Every day homeschooling becomes even more popular especially in the United States. There are in fact a number of factors contributing to this. For a start parents naturally want better quality tutoring for their kids. The general consensus would appear to be that parents want their children to be taught in a more one-on-one environment.

In addition, another main concern of parents is a protection issue in regards to their child’s safety. These concerns surround shootings, gangs, drugs and the anger of children in general in today’s society and this anger manifesting itself on school campuses.

Another very important reason that many parents take it upon themselves to homeschool their children is the fact that with homeschooling you have far more say in your child’s curriculum. Additionally as a parent you can try different learning systems with your children to see which ones they best respond to.

Transmitting your beliefs onto your children

The beliefs of parents are not always passed on in public schools the way they would want, so homeschooling will provide the opportunity to give their children the education in the values and beliefs they have. Obviously it is impossible in a public school for the teachers to teach each child the beliefs and values of their parents.

There are plenty of homeschool books and other materials that can aid you as a homeschool teacher in providing quality education to your children. While one uses these materials to properly instruct their children they can easily pass on the beliefs and values they believe their children should embrace.

Tailoring education to your children’s style of learning

To fully take advantage of the power of homeschool one must tailor their child’s education to the style of his or her learning. For instance with some children it is best to utilize more visual materials instead of relying heavily on textbooks.

You may well find that your child will learn better with the use of audio and/or video and so you would full back to a lesser use or written textbooks. Or on the contrary maybe your child is a book worm and takes in everything he or she reads. The point is, as a homeschool parent you can find out what best works with your child and go with it.

Also, the beauty of home schooling is that you can tailor make the child’s curriculum. So not only can you select the right home school books to provide the basics of education, but also incorporate into the teaching plan other things you deem important.

by Joseph N. Abraham, M.D.

More and more parents are turning to home schooling as an alternative to traditional education. Doubtless, this makes sense. Our homes are where we learn most of what life requires of us; and no teacher can do as much for a student as a parent does by talking, reading, and otherwise instructing a child. Home schooling extends this, and does so quite effectively: in fewer hours per day, home-schooled children frequently cover more material than students in traditional schools.

However, not all parents are prepared to take over the education of their children. They may not have the education themselves to do this; they may not have enough time; and most unfortunate, many of them simply aren’t interested.

When one or more of these is the case, then we are well-served to build schools. Institutional education may not be as effective or efficient as home-schooling, but it still correlates powerfully with all desirable societal outcomes: income, lawfulness, civic participation, personal fulfillment. The bumper sticker is valid: “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”

Few parents have all three requirements. And even those who do, almost always need some help. Few among us have mastery of visual and acoustic arts, mathematics, language, social studies, etc., that we can teach a child all the way through the high school requirements.

And for the handful of people who can do it all, everyone has limits: who has the mastery to educate a child through all the necessary college courses?

Is home schooling our goal? Should we build our lives so that our children are all home-schooled? As our world becomes more sophisticated, and more broadly educated, perhaps so. In the future, we might hope that all families have at least one parent with knowledge, time, and interest to home school.

So home-schooling is very attractive, and perhaps one day will be universal. But for the near future, brick-and-mortar schools are still necessary for most children.

by Brian Lehr

Every Christian homeschool encounters times when things get a little difficult. To help you get through those moments, here are some thoughts that will help you put everything into perspective.

Think about why you and your family decided to start a Christian homeschool. One of the most prominent reasons is so that your family could have more time together.

When problems arise, don’t start looking to the public school system to solve them for you. Your answer is within your family, so gather the family together to discuss the issues, and brainstorm how to fix them.

Children need stability in their home lives, and one of the best ways to provide this is to set up several family traditions. Maybe you’ll decide to have a prayer and devotional time each day as part of your Christian homeschool. Maybe you can develop a charitable work that your children can participate in on a regular basis as part of their homeschooling. Be creative when thinking about what traditions you can have in your family.

One way to create fun and excitement in your homeschool is to celebrate unusual holidays as part of your curriculum. Are you reading any of the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder? Did you know that her birthday is on February 7th? Celebrate it with a party and cake! If you’re studying the history of the Roman Empire, consider looking into March 15 — it’s the day that Julius Caesar was assassinated – “Beware the Ides of March!” (from Shakespeare’s play).

Too many parents don’t include their children in the process of selecting their curriculum, and this can often end up being a source of conflict. When choosing books to read, assignments to do, etc., let your children have some input about the things they’re interested in doing. They will learn much more quickly and effectively.

Give yourself permission to free the children of a curriculum or program if it isn’t working. A plan that has everyone stressed out, crying, and fighting is not a good plan at all.

Accept chaos as normal! If you wait to homeschool until life is neat and tidy, it will never happen. The most teachable moments are usually in the middle of bedlam.

Every child learns things differently. After teaching your children for awhile, you will soon learn what their strongest styles of learning are (ie: auditory, visual, hands on). When you discover this, then start teaching the subjects that the are not very good in, using the style of learning that they enjoy the most.

Comparing our children to those who are schooled traditionally only creates defeat and poor self-esteem in your child and in you. Homeschoolers learn differently; our freedom to learn in our own way is our key to success.

There will be times when you will feel like throwing in the towel. Don’t give in to those temptations. Perhaps all you need is a short break. Maybe your children need a break for the day. No one’s stopping you; it’s your school to do as you like.

Have a play day! There are going to be days when it seems like all hell is breaking loose in your homeschool. What do you do? Certainly spend some time in quietness and prayer, but perhaps you just need to cancel school for the day too. Go for a walk. Getting away from the situation will help you think more clearly.

Parents must fill up their pitchers before they can fill up their children’s cups. Do something for yourself. Go to the library alone for a change. Try having dinner with your best friend, go see a play, or take a dance class just for you. If we are running on empty, we have nothing to give our families.

We live in Ohio, so in our state – we start by sending what is called a “letter of intent” to the superintendent of our local school board. Basically this letter states that we intend to home school our boys, and we also need to include a basic outline of the curriculum we will be using for the year. Every state has it’s own policies, so start by calling the superintendent of your own local board of education.

You may find that there are other requirements depending on the State you live in, or country for that matter. Since we live in the US – we have requirements by state, but I’m sure there are also requirements by country too. You may even need to name and register your home school.

Most cities will have a local homeschooling resource center, or you can find local homeschool groups. On of my personal best home school resources has been our local homeschool group. Within these groups, you can get acquainted with other parents in your area that are homeschooling too. Many of these groups will have more experienced families that you can learn from. Not only that, they will often share in teaching duties, schedule field trips, classes and other fun things!

Probably the best home school resource you will find, will be online. These online resources are kept up to date and current – even daily! After your initial exploration of the other resources we have listed here, your online resources will become a staple in your life. We hear about free things to do, like zoo trips, and spread it around online, so paying attention will get you some VERY cool free things!

You will find that homeschooling blogs are particularly helpful because other homeschooling parents will post comments, suggestions, tips, tricks, and yep – even free stuff when they hear about it. You will want to find other homeschooling families with blogs in your area, even Yahoo groups – so you can take advantage of the local free opportunities that come along. The online community will provide an excellent place for you to learn, grow, and contribute. Your children will benefit because you are taking advantage of all that is offered!

Among parents main responsibilities and concerns are getting their children the best education they can afford. This objective is becoming increasing harder for most parents, as they do not want to jeopardize the quality of education that their child receives. There are many factors contributing people turning to affordable home school options, two factors being tight finances and school safety concerns.

The majority of parents fantasize about their children being able to attend the best and most expensive schools in the area that they live in. But, at this current time when the economy is unstable and steadily eroding disposable income, the net pay that most families bring home is usually not enough to pay for more than just the basic bills. For this reason, affordable home school options may offer a better alternative.

The days are gone when putting money into saving accounts, trust funds, or educational investments funds could be considered an effective way to assure their children’s future academic needs. In these times of marginal savings rates, parents would better benefit from more proactive approaches, such as seeking out reasonably affordable home school programs.

Home schooling can be an excellent economic solution for parents who want to give their child the best there is in education without having the entire family suffer financially. Not only is affordable home school a viable alternative route to excellence in education, home schooled children consistently achieve high scores during standardized academic testing.

Home schooling is flexible and personal. The goal of home education is to meet every child’s learning capabilities and pace. With home schooling, the parents assume responsibility for selecting and implementing the curriculum they think will draw out the best from their kids. An affordable home school curriculum will give each child a different curriculum based on their interest and ability.

Affordable home school programs also allow families to choose how they spend their time with learning and recreation. Using the home school setting, children learn the same range of educational goals as a traditional curriculum but without bullying, humiliation, and other issues that can so easily be a part of regular school.

Many parents end up having fun and being reacquainted with the same school subjects that they felt were hard to understand or dull when they first learned the same material as their children are now. An affordable home school program of study can be a wonderful method to discover new activities and ways to learn while supporting conventional family morals and a good education.

Many parents ask when it is appropriate to begin homeschooling their child. These parents do not consider that homeschooling is in fact a natural process which parents typically begin very early indeed. Although it is not often thought of as homeschooling, a great portion of the interactions you have with your child are in fact educational in nature. When you teach your child their ABCs, you are homeschooling them. Parents homeschool their children all the time without even thinking of it.

This shows us that it is never too early to begin homeschooling your child. There’s a lot to homeschooling besides teaching your child on a classroom-based model; you can let your child pursue their own interests to a large extent, which will show you as the educator a way forward to teaching your child in a way that will retain their interest. All parents do this as a matter of course, but few call the process homeschooling.

Homeschooling offers parents a chance to spend a lot of quality time with their child. You can count, read and write together. You can take your child on educational field trips such as to museums. There’s a lot to teach your child that you can’t find in a textbook. You and your child can learn from simply observing the world.

Interact with your child; as you do so, see what your child is interested in. This can help you to tailor your curriculum and assist your child in setting goals for themselves. You can see what kind of pace is suitable for your child and will keep them interested in learning. Homeschooling is something all parents do; official homeschooling is nothing more than an expansion of this strategy which helps parents to prepare their children for life.

The education you give your child when they are very young can be a solid foundation for more formal homeschooling later on. Every time you help your child to learn, you are helping to foster your child’s natural curiosity and love of learning.

Our society has some very set ideas about education ? we think of school as a process which begins in kindergarten at the age of five and continues at least until high school about the age of eighteen. Many parents would prefer that their children instead be allowed to learn at their own pace however ? this is why a lot of parents opt to homeschool their children. Perhaps it’s best to ask not when to begin homeschooling your child, but rather where to go next; since as a parent, you already homeschool your child!

You probably wonder if you are the only one in your area when first starting to think about homeschooling. However, that is not likely with the ever increasing number of homeschooling families. You will need to know where to look to find other homeschoolers, which may not always be easy.

One place you will likely find other homeschoolers is at local churches. Although all homeschoolers aren’t Christians, and it certainly isn’t a requirement to homeschool, many homeschoolers are. If you don’t currently attend services, you might consider attending a couple of services to see if there are homeschoolers at the local church.

Besides churches, a homeschooling family can be found at the public library. Visiting the library during school hours will help in the search of homeschoolers. If you find children during that time, most likely they are homeschooled and a parent is sure to be nearby. The librarian would also be a good person to ask if she knows of any homeschoolers. Most likely she will since they are some of her best patrons.

If you take your kids to the park during school hours, you’ll probably run into at least one homeschooling family there enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. Or they might be picking up leaves for a nature book, or finding other items to use in a school project. In any case, local parks are a great place to find homeschoolers.

While doing your own shopping at the grocery store, you might find a homeschooling family. Rather than just depending on books to teach, many homeschoolers use real life circumstances. It’s likely they’re doing comparison shopping for their math lesson if you see children standing around the meat freezer with calculators.

The Internet is another place to find homeschoolers in your area. Try doing a search on one of the common search engines for “homeschool groups (your city).” If that doesn’t work, expand your search to include your county and then your state. Since there are homeschoolers in every state of the union, surely you’ll find someone close by. On the outside chance that you don’t find anyone locally, don’t give up. You can still find support online through any number of Yahoo homeschooling groups.

When searching for homeschooling families locally, don’t be afraid to approach a family that you see out and about during school hours. Most homeschoolers are used to being asked why their children aren’t in school. They probably won’t be offended and asking questions is a great way to meet new acquaintances. Keep an eye out for them; you may find there are more homeschoolers in your area than you first thought.

To find out about homeschooling, you can check out books from your public library. Everything you need to know about the topic is more than likely to be found in a large selection of books. Since most homeschoolers rely on the library for learning, and source materials, you may even ask the librarian if there are homeschoolers in the area.

Is there a support system available? After you’ve read some books, find local homeschoolers, or do an online search for “homeschool groups (your city)” or “homeschool groups (your state).” There are homeschooling co-ops available in many places, as well as opportunities for families to get together and have fun.

What if I have other questions? After you’ve found some families that already homeschool, and ask them about the pros and cons of homeschooling. Most families will be honest about their reasons, and will be more than happy to help you make an informed decision. Ask them what types of hardships they had to deal with when starting out. Should you be concerned about socialization for your children? What about curriculum? Do they have suggestions about what to use or not to use?

What curriculum do I choose? Curriculum choices are astronomical – in the variety available, and often in the price. While it is possible to have “school at home” by choosing books very similar to what are offered in public schools, it is also possible to homeschool without using a set curriculum at all. The library books you checked out earlier should have explained about the different methods, and should have given you an idea of what your child should learn in each grade.
