Jenny asks…

Can an atty help me re: discrimination issues with my son's high school?

Please advise! My son, an above average student (grade wise), involved in school athletics, etc, got suspended again today (for 'verbally' having an argument w/another student). Both kids got suspended for (2) days, missing baseball games. My son is no perfect child as he will defend himself as the situation calls for. However, our school's policy states that all involved in any dispute, physical or not, will suffer consequences, such as suspensions, etc.

We have a big HS, over 1800 students. I can't walk into this school without seeing kids shoving one another (playing or not) and/or dropping the "F" bomb at one another. My point being is this. If all students got suspended for running their mouths or making threats to do bodily harm, such as fighting (though don't follow through), then HALF of this school's student body would be home daily!!!

I have a staff member at this school agreeing with me that my son is being targeted (for whatever reasons). I can't exactly divulge this staff's member's name to the discipline principal without jeopardizing his job. Furthermore, one of my son's teachers flat out called him a bitch in class (in front of other students), making other students laugh at my son. So why doesn't THIS teacher get suspended from his job??!

History: I've Googled a little regarding my son's school (John R. Rogers High School, Spokane, WA). I have read that this school has many past issues, negative ones.

Is there an attorney who would be interested in going up against a school district, particularly this school, at least to review policies to see if they are indeed being violated, exaggerated, or whatever?

I know too many students that are sent home. Hello! Most of these kids WANT to be at home. So how is this punishment? Of course, one parent, such as myself, can't change the world. However so, I'm tired of standing by and watching my son who truly is a decent/likable kid, always get punished because of a personality conflict between he and a staff member (one teacher in particular). In other words, isn't it too ironic that all his other teachers have NO problem with my son? Yet, all it takes is this ONE teacher to run down crying to the offices and voila...my son is going home again!

Please advise in what action(s), if any, I can take.

Thank you sincerely,
To WRG: How can say this IF you do NOT know our school's policies and reinforement practices? My son got caught doing what?! "Arguing with another high school student?" Again, if all kids were suspended for this very thing, our schools would be half empty on a daily basis! I'm seeking real advice, helpfulness, not personal opinions that hold little weight. But thanks.
To begin with, thank you to those who have taken the time to answer. Appreciated! Second, I was NOT attacking "WRG". I was simply pointing out that he gave me no advice as I was seeking. He was merely saying "Your son is wrong" (without knowing all facts). I have lack of respect for those who are judgemental without having lined all your ducks in a row FIRST, that's all.

Again, no one has pointed out that I had mentioned that a staff member sent me an EMAIL agreeing with ME, the parent, that my son didn't do anything deserving of an out-of-school suspension (according to their school policies). This alone should show something isn't right, correct?! This is one teacher who stuck his neck out for the student/parent. And what school has it in their "black on white" policies that NO STUDENT SHALL EVER exchange negative words to one another-EVER or risk getting suspended? Ridiculous. My son was pushed into a locker, my son said back to this kid "Go wash your hair" as his way o
Failed to note: From the size of town I was raised in (one elementary, middle school and one high school), a town of 5K. Spokane is NO little town! It has more than (10) high schools, and these are only the public schools. For these 'great rating', my son's HS has the poorest ratings of all high school combines in Spokane. This is a fact. If there were no 'issues' with behavior in general at this school, they why does our school have the ONLY resources officers? I wish I could move but moving isn't an option for several months yet.

Sara answers:

'WRG' is correct this is NOT discrimination and no lawyer will take this case........

And why did you need to attack 'WRG' ?
Perhaps this is why you child is in trouble, maybe attacking someone whom you disagree with is taught in your home.......

Just because others did not get caught does NOT mean your child is being discriminated against....
I am positive there is a lot more to this story and your child has left out a few facts......
Schools generally do NOT suspend students as the first option for discipline and i am sure that is not what happened in this case either.....

Add to this what "Curious' added about the schools ratings and it makes the lessons learned at home seem even more relevant....

Evening In Home Child Care Costs?

I am doing some research as to how much it costs typically for an in home child care setting. The hours would be full time from 4 P.M to 2 A.M, lets say Monday through Friday. The location is Spokane, WA. If anyone can give me an idea of the typical costs for a three month old infant as well as a seven year old with transportation, meaning being picked up from school, as well as food being provided, that would be great! Thank you.

Sara answers:

I charge $15 per day for children under 2 and $13 for children over 2. I also charge $4 per child if the children are in care after 9pm or before 6am. So for your 2 children, 5 days a week with nontraditional hours, $180. If I provided food and transportation I would round it up to about $200-225 per week.
