Linda asks…

3 year old girl, Too young for Girls Scouts and the like, what else is there?

I have a 3 yr old(Jan) and want to get her involved in some activities. Most of the age requirements do not start until 5. I understand why, 3 yr olds are hard to contol at best. My daughter is different(yes I know isn't everyones). She has already completed kindergarten curriculum(we homeschool) and is extrememly social. She will know the names of just about everyone at Walmart or the park by the time we leave. She talks with everyone. I have already put her in the older class at Sunday school and she thrives. I am wanting to put her in a group activity or two. Something like Girls Scouts but she is too young. Are there any other groups like that who will allow younger kids?

Sara answers:

You are smart to want to get her involved with groups of kids her own age! I know that you home school, but maybe having her in a preschool for a couple times a week could give her socialization with children her age- obviously you don't need to worry about the academic part . The reason I suggest a preschool is that they often have age appropriate field trips, activities, etc. Obviously some are better than others, so do your research! Good luck to you!

Joseph asks…

homeschool curriculum- secular - non bible based.?

I have made the decision to homeschool my first grader this coming school year. My reason for homeschooling is that he came out of public school kindergarten knowing less than he did going in. That is not acceptable to me. He is not a genius but he is a smart kid.

I am not doing this for religious reasons and I am finding that most curriculums are for religious people and are bible based. I am trying to find a non-religious program for homeschool that is basic and simple to use while my other multiple little kids run around. I am also trying to avoid virtual schools sponsored by the school districts, computer programs, etc. I want my kids to learn how to use and navigate books not computers as a main source of information at this time.

If you know of any programs please send me links!!
Thanks.

Have a look at Calvert. Http://www.calvertschool.org/calvert-school It has an excellent reputation. I can't say; I haven't used it myself. It covers prek through 8th, and everything you need comes in a box with complete teacher's instructions.
