Homeschooling is a great option to take up for your child considering the many advantages it has to offer as compared to the standard schooling system. Not only do you make sure that your child surpasses academic standards, but it also develops innate talents and possibilities that your child shows.

However, the curriculum has to be given a great amount of thought as it is the base of any successful homeschooling system. The list of subjects and curriculum matter can easily be availed from various homeschooling conventions which take place all over the world, or you can arrange it through the internet or even checking out the local school board. Apart from the compulsory subjects, there are a lot of possibilities you might like to consider. Let us take a look at few of them.

Family Orientation

A lot depends on what background you come from as it would make for most of the curriculum. If you belong to the certain religion, like the Catholic Church, you might like your child to study religion and theology as a subject from a particular stage. If you are from an art background, you can make your child study art and various paint styles of the masters.

Nurturing Talents

Being the parent, you know your child the best and no one can know him or her better. Children develop most of their interests and abilities from a very young age and you can lay a profound impact by encouraging nurturing these interests by making it a part of their academic studies. Not only will it build an interest for studies and make them patient to other subjects, but with given time and patience the child would master various skills and talents as they age. If your child likes music, arrange for a tutor to teach him his choice of musical instrument.

Learning styles

A good curriculum includes many samples of learning styles and teaching styles which have been constructed with the understanding of child psychology. Recognize the learning abilities of your ward and build it according with your teaching methods. Most of these constructive curriculums can be purchased through various sources like mail order or online. Take up a few books or check up the local library to expand and develop the academic support.

Evaluating Goals

Set standards and goals to meet in both long term and short term standards. This would help you understand your priorities and make the moments you spend together studying count. Make sure to achieve most of them as nothing can compare to the pleasure and the sense of fulfillment when you attain these goals together with your child. And in a short period of time you would find your child at a higher level of knowledge as compared to most of his or her peers.

Overall, the way you design the homeschooling curriculum will play an imperative role in the development of your child as a knowledgeable individual and a person who is equipped with proper life skills. A little thought can make the future of your child, so it is crucial that you put in adequate time in designing a relevant curriculum.

Homeschooling Curriculum

You love your kids and you want the best possible future for them. Very high on that last is a good education. The trouble is, you panic every time you send them to a school that is filled with gang violence, promiscuous behavior, and drugs. You would love enroll your son or daughter in a private school but tuitions are through the roof! That's why affordable homeschool options suddenly look better and better..

The economic conditions today are pressing in on more and more families. Many parents don't make enough to cover the necessities of life, much less luxuries. Fortunately, when considering an at home education, this does not present much of a problem, because there are many affordable home school options.

Nest eggs aren't what they used to be with plunging domestic and international markets and minimal savings rates. Affordable homeschool programs are an excellent way for parents to provide a quality education for their children and prepare them for college.

There was a time when colleges would frown on students who had received an affordable home school education, but that time has passed. Students who were taught at home consistently score high on their standardized academic tests.

Affordable homeschool courses can be tailored to the talents of each child in your family. Both parents can with sit down with each of their children and determine the best curriculum One of the beautiful things about educating at home is the flexibility it offers your child. It's true they will share the basic subjects, think about how great to be able to give each child their freedom to excel in areas that best develop their passions and skills?

Without a doubt, one of the biggest benefits of an affordable home school program is the lack of peer pressure on your child. Peer pressure constantly blocks a child's desire to learn and often robs them of the sheer joy experienced when acquiring knowledge. Families are also given much more flexibility. More time can be scheduled together as a family and less worry given to rigid learning schedules.

Here's a side benefit you might not even have thought about: You will discover subjects that you hated in school are actually much easier to learn and far more interesting than you thought. I used to hate math " I can trace it back to two separate math teachers that I think were terrible (one used to talk sarcastically to me if I didn't understand something). Now I find I am actually good at math! Our children are getting a great education, and my husband and I have much more control over the friends they associate with and where they go. In the meantime, we have found new activities we love doing together as a family. All of this has brought us, as parents, great satisfaction and peace of mind.

Affordable Home School Programs

Michigan's Compulsory School Attendance Law

The Michigan homeschooling community should be aware of the following: The law states that "every parent, guardian, or other person in this state having control and charge of a child from the age of 6 to the child's 16th birthday, shall send that child to the public schools during the entire school year" (MCL 380.1561, Section 1561[1]). Thankfully, Michigan's Compulsory School Attendance law also contains exemptions so that all children between the ages of 6 and 16 do NOT have to attend a public school.

MCL 380.1561, Section 1561(3): "A child is not required to attend a public school in any of the following cases:

(a) The child is attending regularly and is being taught in a state approved non-public school, which teaches subjects comparable to those taught in the public schools to children of corresponding age and grade, as determined by the course of study for the public schools of the district within which the non-public school is located.

...(b), (c) and (d) are exemptions for students living extremely far from transportation to public school, and for those in attendance in confirmation or religious classes...

(e) The child has graduated from high school or has fulfilled all requirements for high school graduation.

(f) The child is being educated at the child's home by his or her parent or legal guardian in an organized educational program in the subject areas of Reading, Spelling, Mathematics, Science, History, Civics, Literature, Writing and English Grammar."

MCL 380.1561, Section 1561(4): "Exemption from the requirement to attend the public school may exist under either subsection (3)(a) or (3)(f), or both, for a child being educated at the child's home by his or her parent or legal guardian."

Home Educating Under Exemption (3)(a) as a Non-Public School

If a family chooses to home school under exemption (3)(a) as a non-public school, they will be under the authority of the MDE. The MDE has authority over all non-public schools and home educators operating under exemption (3)(a) because the Non-Public School Act of 1921 gives them that authority. All non-public schools must comply with the requirements of the Act which includes the following:

388.551 Section 1. The superintendent of public instruction is hereby given supervision of all the private, denominational and parochial schools of this state in such matters and manner as is hereinafter provided... It is the intent of this act that the sanitary conditions of such schools, the courses of study therein, and the qualifications of the teachers thereof shall be of the same standard as provided by the general school laws of the state.

388.553 Section 3. No person shall teach or give instruction in any of the regular or elementary grade studies in any private, denominational or parochial school within this state who does not hold a certificate such as would qualify him or her to teach in like grades of the public schools of the state.

388.555 Section 5. The superintendent of public instruction by himself, his assistants, or any duly authorized agent, shall have authority at any time to investigate and examine into the conditions of any school operating under this act... and it shall be the duty of such school to admit such superintendent... or authorized agent, and to submit for examination its sanitary condition, the records of enrollment of pupils, its courses of studies... and the qualifications of its teachers.

What Should a Non-Public School Home School Do if they wish to Exist?

To begin a non-public school home school you simply begin home schooling. You do NOT have to ask permission, get a license or even a permit to get started.

You do NOT have to request a Non-Public School Membership Reporting Form (form SM4325).

You must be or use a certified teacher (or claim a religious exemption to this requirement).

You must teach curriculum comparable to that taught in your local school district according to your child's age and grade.

You must provide information regarding "enrollment of pupils, courses of studies and the qualifications of teachers" if, and only if, the Superintendent of Public Instruction or one of his/her "authorized agents" requests this information from you. You may report this information on the SM4325 form, or you may simply submit to the MDE a letter providing the information required by law.

You must submit to investigations and/or examinations by the superintendent or his agent "at any time" at your "non-public school" (your home), unless you are willing to refuse this kind of intrusion into your home and are willing to have the operation of your school suspended, and/or be taken to court over the matter. Although no school official has attempted this type of harassment, anyone choosing this exemption should know that the possibility exists for this to happen.

Home Educating Under Exemption (3)(f) as a Home Education Program

Michigan homeschooling Families choosing to home school under exemption (3)(f) are not required to do any type of reporting to any school official. If you are sent a SM4325 form, you do not have to return it or make any type of response. The MDE has stated that, "If the home school family has not registered, the Department will consider the home school family to be operating under the exemption (f) solely." There is also no law requiring that any information be provided to the local or intermediate school district. Therefore, a home school existing under (3)(f) has no responsibility to provide any information to local school officials.

To begin a home education program you simply begin home schooling. You do NOT have to ask permission, get a license or even a permit. You do NOT have to request a Non-Public School Membership Reporting Form (form SM4325). You must provide your children instruction in the subject areas of Reading, Spelling, Mathematics, Science, History, Civics, Literature, Writing and English Grammar."

The Michigan Department of Education's Position on the Exemptions

The following statements have been taken from a Question & Answer document which the MDE provided to all of the Local and Intermediate School District Superintendents. It details how they have interpreted their role concerning the exemptions available to home educators.

"A home school family choosing to operate under exemption (a) solely, and complying with the requirements of the Non-Public School Act is considered a non-public school."

"A home school family choosing to operate under both exemptions (a) and (f) must comply with the requirements of both (a) and (f)."

"A home school family choosing to operate under exemption (f) solely, is NOT a non-public school and NEED NOT comply with the requirements of the Non-Public School Act."

"The MDE plays no role with this (the family choosing exemption (f) solely) home schooling family."

"There are no minimum qualifications for the teachers (in an exemption (f) solely home school) except that they must be the parents or legal guardians of the children."

"The (exemption (f) solely) home school family does not report to the MDE."

"Question: How does a home school family operating under exemption (f) provide an organized educational program in the subject areas of reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing and English Grammar?
Answer: The state does not regulate the content of the basic courses."

Foe a parent to start home schooling their child, a teaching degree or college education is not a necessity. All that is required is for the parent to at least be a form four graduate. Although it is a much greater responsibility for the practicing parent, your child will receive for more education from the concerned parent than they would have gotten from a public school system. To add more to this if you find that there are some subjects you can not handle, you can employ a tutor to help you with these.

For your child to excel at a home tuition situation, there are two things you need to put emphasis on. These are;

• The parent or the tutor must have a true desire to teach their children at whatever cost.

You must have the determination to succeed with your home tuitions.

• Total dedication and effort.

If there is no dedication on the tutor’s side (who is most basically the parent), then you efforts will be wasted.

This is all it takes to succeed with home tuitions, the desire and total efforts on your part.

With these two things, your kid will realize a well rounded education that is no match to one who is publically educated. Furthermore, any parent can become an effective and an efficient teacher if they have a true desire to see their children realize a perfect education that surpasses a classroom environment.

There is no one who understands and wants their children to succeed than the parent. And to progress at a much better pace then you would find in a public school situation, a tutor must know and understand the kid well enough and have the desire to see them learn. This is not possible with a public school teacher, their motivation is usually the paycheck they receive at the end of the month. Others have too many children in their class to really care for a specific kid. They absolutely don’t have the time for a single student. The attention that a parent can provide is absolute. This is why children who are home schooled have more potential than their public educated peers.

The biggest problem that the parents face is being unsure of themselves in terms of their ability to teach. School teachers undergoes many years of education programs before they qualify to teach while majority of parents have no teaching training at all. But this should never be deterrent to giving home tuition to your child. You will be surprised how effective your teaching will be assimilated by your child. School teachers face many obstacle on their day to day jobs, thus giving attention to an individual child is usually a tall order. They must overcome and familiarize themselves with many children’s learning styles. Other burdens they have to overcome includes different behaviors, disciplinary problems from different children, school rules and regulation on top others things there are required to adhere to. As a home school tutor, the parent is in charge of only one kid, thus the child learning experience is enhanced greatly.

When it comes to the curriculum, the parent sets it according to what they feel will be beneficial to their children learning experience. They make sure their child learns a specific subject thoroughly before moving ahead. If possible, they can proceed faster because there are no less intelligent children to slow them down. The individual time set for a specific subject is reduced according to the kids learning abilities. In the case of a public or private school, the teacher must start lessons at a precise time and finish at a predetermined time. By getting through with lesson earlier, field trips and other learning activities can be taken care of.

Before you start home tuition for your child, take a little time and search the web for ideas and lesson plans. You are apt to find different topics from different areas of home schooling. With the help of these resources, online home tuition education groups, forums and your strong desire to help your child achieve a good education, you can be assured of success.

Home Tuition-Do you have what it takes to start it on your Child?

• The internet- The World Wide Web or what is generally known as the internet is a useful and valuable resource and it would be all most impossible for many parents if it were not there. You can do anything, right from researching for essay papers to curriculum at the comfort of your home and it comes very cheap and convenient for you.
• The other way on cutting your home tuition expenses is through online auctions where you can buy curriculum programs and books at throw away prices. If this is not possible for you, then you can pay a visit to your local public library but do not forget to make a list of books which you can borrow to suit your specific needs.
• For those parents who are associated with a home tuition group, you can to swap books between the members or members selling each other books which they no longer need but are useful for your case. These include used curriculums and teaching aids which will be very helpful to a particular parent. After you are through with these books, you can sell them or lend to other home tuition parents.
• Pool in financial resources and negotiate with publishers for a lower price for the needed books among your support group. If you don’t have a home tuition support group in your area, simply go online for homeschooling communities and forums where you will get support and guidance regarding all home tuition resources.
• Another great area where you can get helpful resources includes your local newspapers where you can look for garage and yard sales which have books and craft supplies. Go there and purchase the books that suit your home tuition situation. You can use the craft supplies for a particular craft or a scientific assignment or project.

The most important and expensive part of your home tuition is the curriculum, so before you purchase one, have some consideration into the following points:

ü  It should fit into your religious beliefs and your particular family’s moral standards.

ü  Your teachings and child’s learning styles should be incorporated into the curriculum.

ü  The curriculum should be designed in such a way that it can be used by multiple and upcoming children at whatever stage of life.

ü  The curriculum should be fully updated to suit the current educational needs of the children.

If you think that the curriculum on sale is not what you need for your child, feel free to check the internet and get the one you feel is more suitable for your family needs.

If your child’s home school becomes too repetitive, pay a visit to the zoo, science center or any other field trip to break the cycle. Consider these trips as a form of making the child’s concentration on education more comprehensive and all-round.

How do you Cut Costs Associated with Home Tuition?

Although it's difficult for researchers to gather data on home schools, some research indicates that adults who were home schooled have a higher college attendance rate and seem more satisfied with life in general.

Home schooled children have consistently scored exceptionally higher than average on achievement tests. I recently read that home schooled 3rd graders scored higher than 81% of public school students in math alone!

The biggest benefit to home schooling is simply that parents love their kids and want them to have a bright future. Teachers care very much about their students but no one loves their kid like a mom or dad.

Often the home school parents are able to spend significantly more money on educational materials than a public school can. The average cost of supplies per student per year can range from $200-$2000 at a home school.

Home school students can progress through educational material at the student's rate. This makes it much easier for home school students to be enrolled one or more grades above their public and private school-age peers.

Home schooled children are healthier than public school kids since they aren't exposed to so many sick children.

Home schooled children don't deal with so much peer pressure.

Home schooled children often develop exceptional relationships with their siblings.

Parents can offer their children instruction in areas that aren't fostered in public schools. The curriculum is flexible and can be ever changing.

The schedule can be changed if a child needs more or less help in a particular subject.

One mom told me that she is able to take her children to the museum for art class, the symphony for music, and ice skating for physical ed. She wants her children to socialize with other children their age so she often incorporates other home schools into her field trips.

The Benefits of Home Schooling

Some single parents tend to experience a number of challenges, considering that they have to bring in the cash flow to the house and have a child to take care of at the same time. There is often hardly anyone to talk to and look for support, not to mention that the social life is figuratively down the bogs. And when most single parents choose to home school their wards, the odds faced are quite considerable. However, homeschooling does seem to be a feasible choice as most private schools are unaffordable due to its high expense.

Nevertheless there are many parents who have managed to cope with and keep up with academic standards and beyond by homeschooling their wards. Not only do they harbor and support good learning but they also give their wards a zest for knowledge and teach good family values along with the many subjects. Many homeschooled children have over the years proved that they have higher level of knowledge when compared to their peers and have often done well on the standardized tests.

In case you are single parent and are considering homeschooling your ward, then the suggestions mentioned below may come in handy

Effective Time Management:

Time management is the key to the success of a homeschooling initiative. If you are a single parent, with good time management and organization, you would be able to devote the much needed attention that your child needs to learn and keep up with the tutelage. You would find that where you initially thought that time would be against you, there is a good chance that you might be surprised. See, in the school system model of 6-8 hours, there are breaks between the classes, gym time, lunch recess and other lengths of time where the child is idle. A good effort to make each moment count is the best method of a successful home schooling schedule. But make sure not to bog down the child with too much responsibility.

School Nights

There is a good chance that you can keep up with your work while catching up to the needs of your ward through homeschooling. Public schools have to follow government holidays, weekends and seasonal vacations which do not apply to homeschooling. You can make most of these days and more. However, it is best not to persist and make sure that the child gets enough time to play and relax. Mix foreign languages, art and music(if you know how to play an instrument or two) during study hours to help your child relaxed or you can even encourage a reading hour where you and your ward can take up a good book and enjoy together. Classics like a Tale of two cities, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn make for a good read which is enjoyable for both parents and child

Subject and Curriculum:

Most of the subjects can be negotiated by you alone. However, you might need a tutor for specialized subjects which are needed in the stages of higher learning. This might cost a bit, but do understand that it is a lot less as compared to the schooling system costs.

Homeschooling Tips For Single Parents

Some useful tips:

•    Before buying textbooks, make sure what curriculum you want to teach your each child. Consider every subject that you will teach.

•    Also, make a list of items you need for each subject and child. These items may include lesson plans, workbooks, answer keys, flash cards and extra items.

•    It is always better to note down the name of publisher, title, edition and level of each item that you want to purchase.

•    There are many places to find used homeschooling materials online. Some homeschool curriculum providers have message boards where you can list or buy used homeschool books. You can check in websites and online message boards. There are many online auction sites that provide lists of used textbooks.

•    Check out with local homeschool groups for used textbooks. You can place your list in the newsletter or email group. Look in for listings of items that are on sale or for free. It might have not worked for their homes, but might work for you. So just have a look before someone else peeps in!

•    You can also have a look at local garage sales, thrift stores, library sales and used bookstores. Many of them are at half price that can suit your budget as well as your requirement of that particular curriculum.

•    Be aware of the condition of the used homeschool curriculum items you’re buying. If the workbooks are worked through, you might need a replacement of the same. It is better to ask the seller about any missing or damaged pages in the books or pages that contain writing. If only a few pages have been worked through, you can erase the writing easily.

•    There are places or districts that sell surplus and cheap textbooks annually. Check in for such books. Keep in mind the outdated books that have no purpose of useful teaching. Screen carefully through the pages of the books.

•    Evaluate the sellers payment methods before shelling out money for the purchase of textbooks. Try to understand the total cost of the products and how they can be reached to you. Ask for the time of arrival of books and the sellers return policy.

•    Your feedback is essential to help other buyers decide whether to make the purchase or not. Thus, your feedback about the seller is essential for other buyers to make their decision.

Used Homeschool Curriculum – What You Need To Know?

Prevent Loss of Learning

Facts oftentimes are not being practiced enough during summer vacation. Learning through the summer months can help avoid a loss of learning that occurs due to non-practice. Oftentimes teachers spend a good portion of the beginning of the school year reviewing what was learned in the previous year. Summer learning programs can make this process and transition much smoother for a child.

Catch Up on Missed Skills

Sometimes a child can get behind and even miss some of the important basic skills. This is especially true in mathematics. Because previous math skills are required to learn and process upcoming math, it's important that a child fully comprehend each math process. Knowing and understanding all required concepts will help a child succeed in future lessons. A summer math program can help a child catch up on these essential skills.

Review Learned Skills

If a child has already mastered the required skills for his or her grade level, summer learning programs can prepare that child for the next grade level. Learning about some of the things to come can give a child a head start and smooth the transition to the next grade level. Math can be especially difficult for some children to grasp. For more convenience and flexibility, try an online summer math program.

Master Learned Skills

Even if a child has learned the basic required skills in the appropriate level during the school year, summer learning can still be beneficial. Further practice of those skills can help ensure or achieve mastery. Mastering basic and advanced summer math skills can help a child to achieve in upcoming study during the school year. To advance further in math, mastery of each skill is required. That is because as math progresses, those skills will be used to solve more complex math problems. Practicing learned facts through the summer months can help a child master those required skills.

Get a Head Start on the Upcoming School Year

Even a child who has already mastered his or her required skills can still benefit from a summer learning program. A child can get a head start on lessons to come in the upcoming school year by learning some of them through summer education. This can either help the child to advance further in studies or provide a smooth transition when advancing to the next grade level. Online summer learning programs are a great way to do this. Advantages of Learning Through the Summer Months

Even though the system is still new, it has already produced massive interest and excitement among technology pundits and internet aficionados.

Computer experts believe that the new search engine could be an extraordinary leap in the evolution of the internet. Nova Spivack, an internet and computer expert, advised that Wolfram Alpha could prove equally as popular as Google. "It is really impressive and significant," he wrote. "In fact it may be as important for the web (and the world) as Google, but for a different purpose."

Tom Simpson, of the blog www.convergenceofeverything.com, said: "What are the wider implications exactly? A new paradigm for using computers and the web? Probably. Emerging artificial intelligence and a step towards a self-organizing internet? Possibly... I think this could be big."

Wolfram Alpha will not only give a direct answer to queries like "how high is Mount Everest?", but it will additionally create a organized page of related information – all properly annotated – such as geographical location and nearby towns, and other mountains, complete with charts and graphs.

The real innovation, however, is in its ability to sort things out "on the fly", according to its British inventor, Dr Stephen Wolfram. If you ask it to compare the height of Mount Everest to the length of the Golden Gate Bridge, it will tell you. Or ask what the weather was like in London on the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated, it will cross-check and provide the answer. Ask it about D sharp major, it will play the scale. Type in "10 flips for four heads" and it will determine that you want to get the probability of coin-tossing. If you want to know when the next solar eclipse over Chicago is, or the precise current location of the International Space Station, it can work it out.

Dr. Wolfram, an award-winning physicist who is equations.

"I've wanted to make the knowledge we've accumulated in our civilization computable," he said last week. "I was not sure it was possible. I'm a little surprised it worked out so well."

Dr. Wolfram, 49, who was educated at Eton and had completed his PhD in particle physics by the age of 20, added that the launch of Wolfram Alpha later this month would be only the beginning of the project.

"It will understand what you are talking about," he said. "We are just at the beginning. I think we've got a reasonable start on 90 per cent of the shelves in a typical reference library."

The engine, which will be free to use, computes by drawing on the knowledge of the internet, as well as non-public databases. Dr. Wolfram said he predicted that about 1,000 people would be needed to maintain its databases updated with the most recent discoveries and information.

Wolfram Alpha has been designed with experts and intellectuals in mind, so its grasp of popular culture is, at the moment, comparatively weak. The term "50 Cent" resulted in "absolute horror" in tests, for example, because it confused a discussion on currency with the American rap artist. For this reason alone it is unlikely to provide an immediate threat to Google, which is working on a similar type of search engine, a version of which it launched last week.

"We have a lot amount of popular culture facts," Dr Wolfram said. "In some cases popular culture information is much more shallowly computable, so we can figure out who's related to who and how tall people are. I certainly expect we will have lots of popular culture information. These are linguistic horrors because if you place in books and music a much of the names clash with other concepts."

He added that to assist with that Wolfram Alpha would be utilizing Wikipedia's popularity index to decide what users were likely to be interested in.

With Google now one of the world's top brands, worth $100bn, Wolfram Alpha has the potential to become one of the biggest names on the planet.

Dr. Wolfram, however, did not rule out working with Google in the future, as well as Wikipedia. "We're working to partner with all possible organisations that make sense," he said. "Search, narrative, news are complementary to what we have. Hopefully there will be some great synergies."

The advantages of homeschooling over public schooling:
